Since overations commenced 2,500 tons have been taken out and shipped. Some specimens of iron and lignite found in the Northwest are on exhibition here at present. The iron stene comes trom about six or seven the Little Saskatchewan River, and doubt in time these minerals will form one of the sources of wealth in the country. As for the lignite, which is found cropping out of the surface of the earth, and which burns with a fierce heat, it is held to bear unmistakable t.ken that coal exists in large quantities in that region. As it is, seme explorers have dug ito a hill in Souris Valley, and found a vein of bituminous coal some eighteen feet in thickness. About eight miles from this place some iron stone was found, covered with 2 coaly deposit, which has convinced some local explorers that where iron exists, coal is generally to be found. It is be- lieved that the valiey of the Little Saskat- chewan will prove eqnally as rich in coal as that of the Seuris. Mr. Murdock, ene of the Government engineers, started with deg trains last week from Winnipeg to explore both sections of the conntry, and the result of that survey will be looked forward to with the greatest interest. The speciinens which were brenvht down are rein irkably fine, and intlierte great mineral wealth in the unmediate neighborhood of that risipg place, so aptly named Rapid City. ee According to the London correspondent of a Scotch journal, a remarkable case will shortly come up in the English Probate Court. {t appears that a young gentleman was left heir co a large fortune with pecu- liar conditions attached to its enjoyment He was tu have £25,000 a year while he re- mained single, and the sam was to be doubled as soon as he married. Not wish- ing to put any restrictions upon his liberty, but anxious at the same time to have the full fruition of the money placed at his dis- posal, he formed a little plan and looked about for an accomplice of the gentler and as the issue in this case proved, the shrewd- er sex. He proposed marriage to a lady ef somewhat shady antecelents. with the proviso that she should have £2,000 per annuin, if, after the lapse of a week, she left him to himself, and acted in every way as ifnotwarriange had taken place. The lady would noc emsent to this preposal, but she made another, which was that she should have absolute control of his fortune for six months, and afterwards her ailow- ance of £2,000. He agreed, and the mnion was effected. After a week, however, he, having returned to his estate, took ill ana shortly after diel. And now his widow claims the property, while his relatives are naturally opposed to the bargain and wani to annul it. o died Th » estimate] numbers of religions denom nations amony the Enulish speaking com munities throuchout the world are : ~—Episen- palians, 15,00 1, O90 5 Methodists. 16 000,000 ; toman Cuatholies, 13,509,000: Presh, terians.
