Mr, MeLean’s Speech Continu3! THE CASE OF MR. PINEAU RE- CEIVES ATTENTION. ——- Mr. McKinnon Sets Himself Right Regarding Dr. Conroy. then pointed out that the House met with thirteen membere on either side. Since then aw addition hasbeen made which gave the Govern- ment a majority of‘one, and it is said that this addition was obtained by questioo~ able means, that the hon. member for Tignish was bought holus bolus. He (Mr. McLean) could show by Pineau’s own band-writing that this was the case. The Government had to buy some one, and he thought he could prove that Pineau re- ceived a consideration for his support from the Local Government and aleo received the promise of a further consideration from the Dominion, Tu support this statement he proposed to tead affidavits Mr. { McLean made by reputable men with whom Pineau was in communication and to whom he freely opened his mind. Theaffidavit of William Zallaghan is as follows : I, William Callaghan, of Ebbsfleett Prince County, Province of Prince Edward Island, farmer, do solemnly declare that en or about the 9:h February last, Heory J. Pineau, M. L. A., of Ebbsfleet, called Oo me and said that he wished to speak to me Oo an important matter and wanted my advice. He stated to me that he was approached by Dr. Wickham, of Tigaish, and was offered that if he would accept, that he,Mr. Pineau, could get the ap pointment of Commissioner tothe Paris Exposition with ihe pay of $5 per day and allexpen-es. He furtier+tated that Dr. Wickham told him tbat he would have to go to Charlottetown two see Premier Farqa- barson who would direct him to the Deputr Minister of Public Works, Ottawa, for fither instructioae. I told him he was adopting a dangerous course aad bet~ ter mind whas he was abou: and go to Tiguish and see his friends, which he promised todo. He said that it would be a great thing for him to see his own country, France, I afterwards saw Mr. Pineau. He told me that be hada letter in hie pocket and his appointment was all rigat, to date from the 15th April to Ist Deeember,.1900. And I make this solemn declaration conscievtiously believing it to be trueand kuowing tbat it is of the same force and effect as if made under oath and ky virtue of the Canada Evidence Act, 1 $93. Wititam Caciacnay. Declared before me at Ebbefleet, Prince County, Provinceof Prince Edward Ie- land, this 28th day ef May, A. D., 1900. Cuaries Darron, J. ?. for Prince County This is adirect charge made by oue of bis ,own constituents aad a personal friend at that time. Mr. Pineau betrayed the trust of his friends. [t is said that gentiemaa wentte Ottawa; indeed there te bo doubt -ebout it. He came to Char- lottetown before he went to Ottawa. I'he strong inference ia that he had «a confer- ence with the premier. 8:nce Mr. Pineau does not deny that he sold bimaelf for $3 a day this Meuse must assume toat kedidse. Mere is another affidavic : I, Jerome Perry, of Ebbstieet, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, fisherman, dosolemaly declare taaton ur about tae uimth day of February last, [ went to the house of Henry J. Pinean, M. L. A., ou business. When at his plaice, ie, Pineaa, told me that Dr. Wickham, of Tig- nish was to see bim ou the previoas day aud offered him that if he would accent he, Wickham, was authorized te ef-r him the appointment of Cemmis-ioner from this Island to the Parie Bxpositien at a salary of $6 per day, and «ll expenses paid. He asked me what 1 thought of this offer. as he said he had been t@ see Mr. William Callaghan for bis advice and would like to have my epinion also, I toldbim I did aot approve of it, as he was elected by usto goto the House of Assembly and @ppose the Government and uot to eel! our rights by taking effers of this kind. ke said nothing further, and I went to my house, And I make this solemn declara- tion conscientiously, believing it to be true and knowing that itis of the same foree and effct as if made under oath and by virtue of the Cauada Evidence Ag; 1893. Mr, McLean here submitted a third affidavit as follows :-— I, James W. Mr. McLean pointed out that Mr. Shea was a man of standing in the community in which he resided, aud his affidavit was in tae highest degree reliable. Mr. Pineau is telling ebeuttowa that he was not in Ottawa atall. But ke could prove that he had been in Ottawa by a letter over bis e@wn signature, whiek he proposed to read te the House, The Speaker said the ietter was mot in erder; that a letter reflesting on the char- acter efa member could not be read in the Heuse. The questien of a supply to Mer Majesty was before the House. Mr. McLean eaid it was kis intention to show why they should mot go into supply, to point out that there was one member present who had norigLtto a seat. Hon. Mr. Sinclair thought the hon mem- ber was out of order. There was a com- mittes of privileges whose duty it was to decide these matters, Mr, Mc Lean said he did not propose to sit down by direction ef the Government or the hen. memberfrom Springton.
