It was given to every member and cost us, first 50, latterly, 75 cents of our fee. Even 8518 nowdennnndod; and, hence, we have to make another arrangement altogether. Fortunately, the generous offer of the Maritime Farmer, already tha organ ai' the F. G. A. of N. S. comes to us at the opportune moment, and we are able to sc- curc it to all the membership at a reason- able rate. Besides. its subscription list in the province, already considerable, and increasing rapidly, will be li-xndcd over to us, and thus wc shrill mutually scrve each other. \Vc have assurances, too, that the horticultural department of this rolinblo paper willbe much improved and brought up to the ievti of all reqiiirenirnts from this quarter. It is satisfactory to be able tn say that nil, cr nc-irlyall, the important resolut- lins passed at our last niecting liavt-_ been acted on by the governing bodies to which they were addressed. Never pcrhapr has any association had more aubstiiutial grounds for gratification. The Steam Navigation Co. has installed the systein of cold storage we tienianderi; the Local Government has appointed aForceitry Commission, continued the lixhibition grant and added ii small amount to our own; the Federal authorities have _iust numod tio Iliiilwriy Coni- ini~n~lon which we favored by rc. solution and prr-iriiscs to take up our suggestion to convoice Ccntrnl Coun- cilsnt Ottnwti in the interest of agricul- ttiri-. We cortninly want some ctnicern to take up cx'r~,nsivcly and make ri paying matter tnilio producer, the jamrninir, pulping an_l cvaporatlngol apples and small fruits. There was n great. demand for pulp of all kinds this year in Britain, a demand that could not be satlstled while we were obligci to give our small fruits away nt. half nothing. You will be called upon to deal by resolution with.t\ll these matters. Considerable quantities of fruit have been brought to the Island this autumn both from tho otbor provinces and the States. Some will lo imported even when wc have ri superior nrticlo and plenty of it ourselves, for i~uch ie the pcrverslty of train. The Marh's Act has greatly protected us against frtudulnntly packed fruit. Some has reached ul, however, and Inspector Burke, whose energy is commendable, has siicurcd several convictions, which will go far to prevent a repetition of this dishonesty. It would be well for importersf ol' fruit throughout the province to acquaint the Inspector with every case of fraud so that purchasers may be safeguarded, evil pun- ished and the fair name ol Canada upheld. When "Canada" is branded on a psek- aize of goods it should be a guarantee, better than any other, that they are honestly packed. It has no stooi in the British Market, I am happy to nay, with regard to the fruit. rif Prince Eiward ls- land, and that good name we cherish ' L1 i White’s Chocolates are covered with the highest grade chocolate coatings _ eXcendingly, anil pledge ourselves to main' tain uuaullied. To handle only the best, then, demand thu prompt adoption of improved methods in fruit raising. Per- haps the weakest link in our horticultural chain at present is the lack of fertllizinig. In other words the orchard ia starved, sees little or no manure and' is supposed to bring in a crop of good fruituudor these conditions. lt is no wonder that we hear sl much about the want of flavor' lu our apples. Siaijve the sheep, the hog, thc liullock and the same tfry will go up about our meat. l"¢-ed thc trio, then, it-tetl it generously and in piuportioii to yt.-ur care and effort, will lie tht- profit; quantity and quality will steadily improve, and its oiiruther products can .~t.auti up against the kccneet c-'niipetition anyviiicrc, so our fruit must. coiiic to lic regarded with special favor not only bet-iiiisc of its rc- markable keeping qualities hut also for the excellence of its flavor. Before concluding, l wish to make my acknowledgements and those of the As- sociation to the gentlemen of tho Execu- tive andthe etiicient Secretary-'l`reasurer especially, for the great services rendered during the year; I wish, also to ackiiow ledge the obligation we are undtr to Secretary of Agriculture Macltliliau, for uufailiug devotion to our ends. An-i whilst on this subject it'wera well to say, too, that we are grateful to the Federni and Local l)epartmciits of Agriculture f.r the very iuutcrial assistance they hive continued tr render us. On our own part we can I think, say, without cgot, lsm,ih»it; we have done about its wt-li as could be, under the clrcuinstaiices, to develop and extend the fruit industry hero and make it a prominent and pcrmenent provin- cial resource; that we have taken no second place in the deliberations of kind` red bodies and have upheld our ticni' Island`a name with some honor with the stranger. This I freely admit, has entailed some sacrifice and Home cost, but such positions will entail stiil greater sacrllioe and expense in the future; and thus while I think that it is too much to expect that those who as sumo them must continue to incur this large ann increasing personal expense without.. cent of remuneration, I am on the other hand as thoroughly convincei that only those equal to the cil`ort of kccp- ing the horticultural banner of P. li. I., on the heights where it is now plants i, and willing tu aacriilce time and energy to serve loyally what it represents, shoull think of assuming such positions. I thank you, gentlemen, for having elect d me twice to this honorable place, and lie- »-peak for my successor the swine enthusi- astic and loyal support which you have accorded to me at all tlmts. iii.
