CFS News Students Denied Democratic Rights "Students in Canada should not fear reprisal when they choose to protest against federal cutbacks", stated Jane Arnold, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students. On May 29, 1990 eight aboriginal students were convicted of trespassing and fined. In the Spring of 1989, native and non-native students alike condemned the Federal Government’s decision to implement the new Post-Secondary Education Assistance Program for Native and Inuit students. Many students exercised their democratic rights to peacefully demonstrate their anger and concern. In Saskatoon and Thunder Bay students were charged with trespassing while in every other centre across the country the charges were dropped. "We believe the charges and subsequent trial of these students is patently unjust. It is unjust. it is clear that their action is a legitimate expression of protest of the abrogation of their treaty right to higher education" added Arnold. The Canadian Federation of Students is calling on The Honourable Kim Campbell, Minister of Justice, as well as the Honourable Ian Scott, Attorney General of Ontario, to take immediate Steps to correct this injustice. The Canadian Federation of Students represents over 400,000 post-secondary students across Canada. The federation is committed to a high quality fully accessible post-secondary system, and to the improvement of the quality of student life.
