Heating the fruit tends more or less to the injury of the flavor, and the lady referred to has found that by filling the cans with fruit and then with pure cold water, and al- lowing them to stand until all the con- fined air has escaped, the fruit will, if then sealed perfectly, keep indefinitely without change or loss of original flavor. FactaL NeurarcA.— Procure a half-ounee of the oil of pepperment, and with a camel’s hair brush paint the parts of the face where the pain is felt. It is said to be an excellent application in all forms of pain in the face. A drop ap- plied.to. the cavity of an aching tooth, and ednfined there with a pillet of cotton \ will arrest the pain. Sour AprLte JeLty.—Take good sour apples and stew them tender ; squeeze through a coarse cloth, add sugar to, taste, and simmer down as thick as de- sired. AppLe Puppine.— Make pastry as for apple dumplings, roll it out, lay it on a pudding cloth, pile up some sliced apples, sprinkle plenty of dark brown sugar on, and cinnamon or nutmeg, add half a cup of water, gather up the edges of the paste together, tie the cloth :oose- ly, boil an hour and a half. For inflammation of the gums, use half a teaspoonful of tincture of myrrh in half a tumbler of woter. Ninse the mouth three times a day. In a little village in the north of Ireland lived two old inhabitants, known by the names of Darby and Pat, each in his own way rather eccentric, and always ready with a witty answer. The former was one day taking his usual walk, when he met his friend Pat, and asked, “ What toime moight it be now ?” Pat, having a short stick in his hand, gave Darby a sharp crack over the headl with it, and said, “ It’sjust shtrack wan.” Darby, looking up a little sur- prised, but always ready, said, “Troth and it’s a lucky job 1 wasn’t here an hour sooner. A Lowell man who lost his character some time ago was severely hauled over by some of his former friends. “I know it, boys. ‘“I know my character is gone, lost entirely. And,” he added, rather pointedly, “it’s too confounded bad, for it was the only one in the place worth saving.” Daniel Webster once good-naturedly wrote aletter for an ignorant servant, and when he asked him, ‘Is there anything else you wish me to say, Mike?’ The man scratched his head and finally said “Yes, if you please. Just say they must excuse the poor scholarship and want of sense the letter shows ;’? and “‘the god-like Daniel” accepted the suggestion The flowing reporter who wrote with reference to a well-known belle “her dainty feet were encased in shoes that might be taken for fairy boots,” tied his wurdrobe up in a handkerchief and left for parts unknown when it appeared the next morning, “her dirty feet were en cased in shoes that might be taken for ferry boats.” New ExpLosivE.—A new explosive agent has just been discovered by Pro- fessor Emerson Reynolds in the labora- tory of Trinity College, Dublin. It is a mixture of seventy-five per cent. of chlorate of potassium with twenty-five per cent. of a body called sulphurea. It is a white powder, and can be ignited at rather lower temperature than ordinary gunpowder, while the effects it produces are even more remarkable, A plain-spoken preacher delivered the following from his desk: ‘1 would aunounce to the congregation that, prob; ably by mistake, there was left at the meeting-house this morning a small cotton umbrella, much damaged by time and wear and ofan exceeding pale blue color, in place whereof was taken a very large black silk umbrella of great beauty. Sx The Greatest Medical Discovery since the Creation of Man, or since the Commencement of the Christian Era. There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many (lifferent diseases has been eaused by outward application as the present. It is an undisputed fact that over half of the entire population of the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. Dr. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them, to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than a hundred of the ordinary kind. All other plasters are slow of action, and require to be worn continually to effect a cure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the ‘nstant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physicians in all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or less used as a medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- tages in a porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful cures effected by DR. MELvrin’s CAPsICcUM Porous PLAstenrs, and their superiority over all other piasters, they now actually prescribe them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, pain in the side and back, and all such cases as have required tho use of plasters or liniment. After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and you want a certain cure, ask your druggist for R. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTER. You can hardly believe = own convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and quick in its action, you can rely on its safety for the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and other poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a sufficient ane of its merits, and one plaster will sell hundreds to your friends. your druggist for Dr. MELVIN’s CAPSI- CuM PoROUSs PLASTER, and take no other; or, on receipt of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, they will be mailed, post paid, to any address in the United States or Canadas.
