I have scientific explanation of the omnolence whi h overtakes people in churel i used to think that it was the duliness of the sermon which pro- voked the sleep of the congregation. One remembers the actor who gave a private reading of his play to his fricnds, and when he was dore asked their cpinion. At iast when one began to speak, the playwright interrupted : o>F , . vw You can have asleep.” ‘“ Ah,” replied the critic, “do you not know that sleep is an optnion?” And sleep is certainly an opinion, and not liattering one an especialy But it m not mean that the mon ' really dull. I have seen peopie leep in church under all circumstances, and in the nearing of the most admir- ser- le preachers, prea hing the mast elo- quent sermons. I saw a men sleep when eachel. Mr. Mr. Spurgeon Moody ha than once calied out to have a window opened to wake a omnolent member of his audience, m Knox-Little is accounted a mo:e than usual earnest- rember once in more ib pl ‘her o ness ee e, FOR e tem Worcester seeing } t } ra minister, clad in sur- ties e aad Stole, and se ate d in the chan- el, go straight to sleep while the canon uwched, disregardirg the eyes of the congregation. And once when Mr. Wore delivered a sermon in that great abdey who sat in my neighborhood went to sleep in shoals. No; my theory is that most times when the congregation sleep during the sermon they are simply hypnotized, For, consider the situation. Most of the conditions which the hypnetist desires are present. There is a ctim and sub- dued light in the room ; the atmosphere is somewhat close, the teniperature is high; where behind the speaker, in a position which compels the eyes of ration, is a jet of gas or a ‘~p gleam of electricity, into which they look as the sermor proceeds, and the preacher goes on and on, in a gen- tle and monotonous \ 9ics, and down and up like a mother’s lullapy ; and beho!d our eyelids are pressed down against our will by soft, invisible fingers, and everything is deliciously vague and far away, and suddenly pe oot? stuanc up with an awakening sound about us, and the preacher is pronouncing the ascrip- tion at the end of his sermon, during whose wise and eloquent paragraphs we have humiliatingly slept. This is hypnotie sleep. And it is the fault, not only of the preacher, but of the whole construction of our ill-ventilated and absurdly lighted churches.—Pittsburg Dispatch. CURE FOR STIFF JOINTS. som<¢ the cong A New Form of an Old Remedy Placed in Operation in London. The application of heat is one of the universal remedies for the various forms of rheumatism. Almost every modern city has its Turkish or Russian bath, and innumerable uncivilized tribes enjoy the same luxury in cruder shape, Travelers in the Navajo country will often fin? cicss to the trail which leads to the neighborhood of water miniature hvts, such as children might build in imitation of Indian tepees. These are the “sweat huts” of the Navajos. When one of that intelligent and thrifty tribe finds himself beset by a severe cold or rheumatic pains he gocs to a secluded spot, close to the water and builds a little conicial hut of a ks. The bottom ends of the sticks may : negara two feet apart, and the upp ends are lashed together in a point. The inter stices of this rough edifice are carefully chinked up, and the inside is covered with a layer of mud, Which makes it absolutely air-tight. Then, buidns a fire, the Indian places stones on the embers. When the stones begin to crack with the heat, they are cast insile the hut, and water is thrown upon thm. ‘The Indian creep in, closes the nar- row entrance chamber ,and remains in the steaming atmosphere until he is nearly suffocated. The latest form of this crude therapuy is used in a London hospital.| It consists of a copper cylin- der about three feet tong and eighteen in diameter, which will ho'd an shoulder or a leg up to the middle of the thigh. The patient, who is suffering from sprains, or gout, or rheumatic affections, is placed in an arm chair, the limb is introduced into the cylinfer and the joint made air-tight by a rubber band. The inside tem, era- ture of the cyclinder is raised, if essary, to 300 or 400 fahr., by means of gas burners . When the enclosed mo:s- ture begins to have a scalding eff-ct, which occurs at about 250 degrees, the end of the cyclinder is opened, and the mvisture escapes, The effects are great- ly increased local circulation, profuse pe en and relief from pain. inches arm up to the neec- Simian Familiarity.
