There were a large number sf hills—not passed by the F:mance Com ittee— lai on the table. “— eas James Butcher ($70), for litting the fire-beti, was laid on the table. it was the opinion of the Council] that the w ri was not satisfactory, as 4 crack was reported visible five inches above the end of the slit; and that Mr. Butcher agreed to do the work for £40. They thougbt it was better to send the bell back to the four sand get anew one. eT stated that it cost him $60 for jabor alone; that he bored a hole an iach and a half above the original crack but during the operation It extended seven inches. He bored above the new y wade crack and slitted it downwards. He thought that the sum of seventy dollars was a reasonable amount for the labor rformed. ; P That the opinion of all might be ex- pressed, it was moved by Councillor Har- ris, seconded by Councillor Davy,— Resolved, That the fire-bell “Big Donald” be rang to-morrow morning (tosday) at nine o'clock. ‘Carried. The Committee to whom was referred the repairing of the kerosene warehouse, reported as follows :— That the building has been repaired to the satisfaction of the Committee and that the store is now ready for use. | The Committee recommend — ist. Ryrne and CF. a ARRI3, ? Consenittes Tuos. Moxrnls, It was moved that the report be ad- opted. ; ; Councillor Byrne objected to the sum o! ten cents being charged for the storage of kerosene. He thought it would be better to make the fee so lowthat it ‘would be an inducement tor dealers to send it to the warehouse instead of secreting it about their premises. H® therefore moved Phat the word ten be struck out ‘n the first clause and the word five insertea. Moved in amendment by Councillor Davy, that instead of the word five the word eight be inserted. ‘The amendment was then put upon motion and carried, : The report, as amended, was. then agreed to. {fhe pumps at the corner of Sydney and Hillsborough Street, and the pump on Hillsborough Street near the residence of Lemuel Poole, was ordered to be repaired. tiis Worship stated that since be came into office he bad been baulked, in variou- ways, in having his instructions, with re- gird to civic improvements, street matters, ete.. carried out. He said there was little done that he had ordered, ana that his orders were received by the City Surveyor in a manner which he wou d not de-cribe to the Council. That it wes impos sible to have his instructions carried out as long as the present Surveyor remained in Office. Councillor Harris said this was a matter of interest to everyoné. He was of opinion that the present Surveyor was not—by nature or education—fit for the situation he occupied. He had great difficu'ty in having bis, orders carried out; and eaid that there wasa great many complainis onaccount of the present inefficiency o! the Surveyor. He therefore moved That the City Surveyor be dismissed, Councillor Byrne thought the motion rather hasty, and requested that it sould stand over tc the next meeting of Coun- cil, so that every member might express an Opinion with regard to the matter. His request was granted, and Councillor Harris gave notice that at next meeting of Council he would bring in a motion for the dismissal of James McNally, City Surveyor. [uz Refor Club Entertainment last evening was .2t what might be called an immense success, as firstly there was uot a large audience; and secondly, judging from the performance, there appeared to |bave been a lack of time previously, in |which to work up the details proper y. For instance, the Orchestral Club did nob perform nearly as well as at their own ‘Concert of the 5th instant, as there was terrible appearance of slovenliness apd attention to Cetails, both in want of their stage arrangements and execution of their pieces. Delays, caused by performers loosing their music, by want of a system of tuning, are exasperating to an audience. Also the tuning, particularly in one piece, appeared to have been im- perfectly done, Carelessness, and not in- competancy, is what is meant. A very good humored and indulgent audience made every allowance for this, as every piece on the programme was enthusis- astcally received, Mr, Fletcher in his cornet solo “ My Pretty Jane,’”’ did himself great credit for an amateur. The articula- tion in the Cadenza was very neat and correct. On the whoie, it was a very en- joyable entertainment, and worthy of be- ing repeated, as the President, Mr. James McKechine, announced, on Thursday, the 29th inst., with a slight change ,of pro gramme. We hope it will be well patro- nized, fecal and Uther liems. lL. O. O. F.—Members of Wildey Lodge, No. 27, I. 0. O. After preliminary singing by an excellent choir, Mr. Fletcher was introduced ito the audience by J. D. At the beginning. chiefly descriptive, the lecturer soon grew eloquent in bis delineation of the beautiful mountain and prairie scenery of the United States, and his fine passages were t received with much applause by the audience.
