“4 yt _ en lan a et Good Resolutions. JANUARY Ist, 1883. ‘This morn,’ said John, the grocer’s clerk, “«T will break off from all my habits bad, Abominable cigars no more Ili smoke, All liquors I'll eschew, and even ale. Too long to them I've been a willing slave; But now I'll save the money that | spent¢ ents five and twenty ev y blessed day Which yearly comes to ninty dollars clear. In twenty years a fortune I will own ['wo thousand dollars in the City Bank, Then I will marry darling Annie Maud. _ Oh ! Annie dear, it is for your sweet self This noble sacrifice I gladly make; So farewell evermore to glass and pipe. JANUARY 2ND, 1883. ‘Tis early morn, the shutters yet are up, When coming down the street 1s some one seen. Cigar smoke curling round his shapely head, To Bruno's deer saloon he wends his way. Arriv’d the ’guiling spot, in brandy strong Are drown’d the pleasant thoughts of yes- terday. Alas! poor John, his resolutions good, His hopes of matrimonial bliss, the dream Of Annie Maud, queen of his vine-clad home, Are caught, like many other good resolves, Within the current of the flowing bowl, Are vanished with the cloud ascending smoke, Noma. i oe eee ——— Current Notes. The question, ‘‘ How long is it necessary to keep children away from school after an infectious disease!’ was answered some time since by the Academy of Medicine, Paris. With scarlet fever, diptheria, measles, and small-pox, isolation ts to be maintained for forty days. Chicken-pox and mumps lose their contagious power after twenty-five days. Among the recent boiler curiosities, says thé “Iron, was the discovery of a piece of plate covering a space of about six inches square, full of fine cracks. These cracks had evidently come from defect in the iron in the first instance, but the boiler had been run for two years at from eighty te ninety pounds pressure, and the boiler inspectors had just pronoanced it perfectly safe for one hundred pounds. A Virginian correspondent gives some in- teresting reminiscences of the Marquis of | Lorne’s family, suggested by that noble- man’s visit to the States. Many years ago, he writes, two brothers, John and Andrew Glassell, tame from Scotland to Virginia, and built in Madison county a stately brick house, still standing, called ‘‘Thorworald,” John Glassell afterwards returned to Scot- land, where he owned a fine estate, but his brother remained in Virginia, and many of his deseendants are yet living there. John Glassell took his only child, Joanna, to Italy for her health, and there met a Lord Campbell, who fell in love with and married the young lady. Lord Campbell afterwards became Duke of Argyll, and was father of the present Duke and grand-father of the present Marquis of Lorne. Wm. E. Glas- sell, son of Andrew and first cousin of Joanna, is still living in Faugier county, Virginia. Members of his family have visited Scotland and been kindly received and entertained by their kinsman, Argyll. _— oe The Great French Remedy, Dr. LeDuc’s Periodica!
