NARROW ESCAPE FROM DnowNING.- Miss Annie Fife, teacher of Suffolk School had a very narrow escape from drowning recently while crossing the river on a foot bridge, during one of the recent freshets. Thanks to the careful nursing of Godfrey, she was able to resume teaching in a. few days. THE law ofthe land regulates appropria- tion, at least so far as watcrproofs are concerned. Yesterday the police arrested \Vm. Rodd of \Viltshire for the appropriation of a water proof coat belonging to James Mc- Millan of Cornwall. The theft was com- mitted in Mrs. Kent's st-able, Kent Street. It seems that Mr. McMillan hung his coat in the stable and went out, and upon his return he found the cc at missing. After searching he located the coat and lodged a complaint with the police who made the arrest. Mimsrnm Snow.-A representative of the GUARDIAN had the pleasure last even- ing of witnessing the dress rehearsal of the League of the Cross ministrels. We have not space at our disposal to give a lengthy description of the entertainment, suflice it to say that it is in every respect 1 a first-class affair. The first part iscom- posed of songs and jokes. The songs being' mostly the latest and rendered in a pleasing manner. The voices are all good and the jokes-well they cause acontinual roar. They are nearly all of them original and there are some excellent local hits. The second part opens with a quartctte by four of the League members, which in it- self is a. star number and no doubt will rc- ceive a. hearty encore on thc night of the performance. Next comes Uncle Eph’s Birthday and in this scene are rung in all the specialties such as club and baton swinging, which are cleverly executed, songs and step dancing by the members, slide trombone solo by a member of the band, also cornes in for a hearty applause. The performance concludes by the com- pany singing “My old Kentucky Horne] and “God Save the Queen". life predict for the boys a packed house and no doubt the sign “standing room only" will be hung out before 8 o`clock on Monday night in front of the Lyceum. Tun Ottawa Free Press of April 24 says: -From reports received from India, it ap- pears that by reason of the lack of rain dur- ing the last Monsoon and the consequent shorage of crops, a large district of that country is afflicted with severe famine. It is represented that relief to be of service must be available at once. N o grain or other provision can possibly reach the famine stricken districts in time to be of use. The government of Canada are pre- pared to receive any cash contributions and forward the same by cable to India. Such moneys should be forwarded to Mr. J. M. Courtney, Deputy Minister of Fin- ance, who acted as treasurer in the case of the former Famine fund, and who will ac- knowledge all contributions and see to their being transmitted with the least possible delay. Should any person desire to make contributions in kind .towards this worthy object, the best way to make the gift of service would be to sell the same and remit the proceeds to the treas- urer. This was done by the farmers of Prince Edward Island in the case of the fo :mer Famine fund. The chartered banks of Canada will receive subscriptions to t :is fund, and contributions may be for- warded to any branch of any such banks. His Excellency the Governor General has kindly consented to become patron of thc fund. ` 1 CIGARETTE SMOKING is said to cause shortness of breath. If this is so. the remedy is, leave them ofi.
