Surely the best advertised boek of the year is “David Harum.” Most of the advertising given it, however was of the free order and given by news- papers in their reading columns. Wide- awake booksellers were quick to take advantage of this, and display the name ef the book and its price in their daily paper advertising. It seems to me, aside from nswspaper advertising, the best sort of publicity the book could have would be window placards bear- ing in quotation marks some of David Harum’s quaint sayings, of which these are the best : “The’s as much human nature in some folks as th’ is in others, if not mere.” “Evry hoss c’n doa thing better ’n’ spryer if he’s ben broke to it as a colt.” “A reasonable amount of-:fleas is good for a dog—they keep him f’m broodin’ on bein’ a dog.” “Do unto the other feller the way he’d like to do unto you—an’ do it| fust.”—The Advertising Man. Good Advice Advertising knowledge cemes slowly as the result of repeated experiments, perhaps costly mistakes. It means labor, study watchful examinatien of results. Certain newspapers or adver- tising mediums pay, and you know they pay—use these freely. Other mediums are doubtful— proceed with caution. Your records show that others do not pay you; cut them off firmly, and do not let any persuasion tempt you to use them again. There are plenty of good advertising mediums without trying experiments with publi- cations that have failed to pay.—Ad- vertising Experience. Expert Reccomendation. Hutcheson, OPTICIAN AND JEWELER, Charlottetown. world’s wheat producing capacity has been reached, and that from now on population is going to outrun the means of subsistence, until we shall have to look to wars and pestilences for relief, and Malthus will be vindicat- ed. When this idea is expleded, or its repetition becomes too monotonous for anybody to read, the habitual alarmist takes the reverse tack and proves by statistics of decreasing birth rates in this or that country that the race is degenerating and will become extinct at no very distant period. Finally, if nothing else sufficiently gloomy suggests itself, they figure out the rate at which the earth is cooling, and how soon we shall be frozen up, or preceed to unfold some mathematic- al calculation to the effect that in a hundred years or two this planet will be hit by a comet and broken into fragments.—Guntcn’s Magazine. Journalism Influential for Good. No modern institution is so far-reach- ing and potential in its influences, and no agency more powerful for impress— ing public opinion, than a free, honest and untrammeled press. But these latter conditions are necessary, indis pensable and inexorable. As no in- dividual whose meral character is not above reproach can hope to exercise a great influence in the community in which he lives, so no newspaper that is insensible to the requirements of re- spectable society can expect to bea factor in the moulding of public senti— ment. A self respecting community demands that a newspaper shall! also be self respecting and any failure in this regard must unavoidably involve the forfeiture of popular esteem.— Baltimore Herald. ‘Doctors said Incurable But the Notary, Mr. Lemire, was cured of Kidney Disease in two months by Dr. Chase’s Kidney- Liver Pills, It is only when thoroughly convinced of the superior merit of a remedy that public men will give their sanction. Mr. E. H. Lemire, Notary Public, 1692 Notre Dame Street, Montreal, tells of his re- markable recovery from a severe attack of kid- ney disease. When doctors had failed, Dr. Chase's Kidney-Liver Pills saved his life. He writes: ‘I give this statement, first because it is only just that the merit of Dr, Chase's Kid- ney-Liver Pills should be made known, and again in order that others may profit by my experience.
