Mr. McLean very properly contradict-

hon. member for Red ' Deer (Mr.
Clark) has struck the right note, and
that he has expressed the feeling of
the people of Canada. Asfhe has said,
this is not the time for such criticism
as we have had. I had a letter yester-
day from a young man at the front,
and he told me that he had justcome
in from the trenches. He told of the
fearful sights he had secll, with :lead
men all around him, and he asks:
"What are you doing in Canada; what
are you doing in Parliament? You are
fighting like blazes_" and for what?
Is it for anything material in the
carrying on of this war-is it for any-
thing material at all? Take, for in-
stance, the statements mario by the
hon. member for Kings (Mr. Hughes)
He said there was nothing but partis-
anship in the conduct of _the Mili_tia_
Department in' relation to the soldiers
in Prince Edward island. lrqprslent'
the largest constituency in that prov-
ince, and I have never heard a, word
uttered with reference to partisan
ship. I know that from one end of
Prince Edward Island to the other
there is perfect harmony, that every
man, woman alld child is' doing his or
her best to forward the interests of
Canada ill this great war for the lib-
ertyof the world. The hon. member
i’or_'_}_{ings_mnde one statement wllich,
Ithink, should not be passed over by
me; he said that no Liberal doctor is
referred to the case ofa doctor wllose`
nephew or brother had been killed.
The man to whom he referred is evi-
dently Colonel Warburton. In Prince
Edward Island we have had a great,
number of men go to the front. In__

burton examined nearly all the re-.

member for Kings it is an unpardotl
able thing that the ‘Conservative par-
ty- shouid have successfully carried
out Canada's share in the conduct of
the war. Had they made mistakes that
would have been to the advantage ol'
the Liberal party, but because they
have conducted aifairshonestly they
have been unpardonabiy wrong in the
eyes of the hon. gentleman. Thsro
was another statement of the hon.
gentleman (Mr. Hughes) to which i
wish to refer, and that is with refer-
ence to the officers who have gone
with thc several contingents. Of the
oillcers who have 'gone' to the front,
ns well as those who are with thc
battalion' now in Charlottetown. the
majority have been Liberals. Nobody
had anything to say _against that.
Though I am s Conservative I never
had anything to say against the ap-
pointment of a Liberal oillcer. All
that is wanted is that the oillcer shall
be competentto flil the position to
_Which _ho is appointed. That is what
all Canadians, wniit,"t`_iist'-and nothing
failofwe do not win! politics in mili-
tary affairs, we do not wont to put
a Conservative in a position of com-
mand if he is not competent to com-
mand, and that has not been done
in the province of Prince Edward Is-
land.
Now, with regard to the supply of
groceries and other things for thc
soldiers in Prince Edward island, ‘let
me say that these contracts were
given after call for tenders. I un-
derstand the contracts have'been giv-
en to the lowest bidders. I have
not made any inquiry as to who goi
the contracts, it is no part of my
business; I never interfereddn it one
way or the other. I do not think that
any of my Liberal-Conservative
friends in my constituency took any
interest in it. All they wanted _war-
to get as many good men as possible
and to send them to the front to do
their duty for the defence of the Em-
pire. »

From quite a number of the fox
ranches in thig Province come very
optimistic reports come just llow.
The General Fur Firms report that
out of sixteen litters examined s few
sys ago they- found sixty-nine pups.
This is a mligiii icient showing. The
company have twenty-three breeders
in the ranch and expect additional
litters.
The Seal River Company have
twenty-one pairs in their ranch and up
to date they have seventeen litters
w_ith more to follow. Some of the lit-
ters are quite large. The prospects for
this Company seein even bri8hter than
in 'former years. The succesg of the
past couple of years means a reduc-
tion in cspitslwéion from $18,000 to
$0.000 per pair, ich is "going some."
