x AMINER Et. DECEMBER. 80-_ 1 AEB. “As Will Be Well. Ye little birds that go Away to Come no more, Until the time of snow And dreary days are o’er, Ye have a lesson taught! Through days of :ain and shine Your melody bas brought Peace to this heart of mine. E’en when the frost was here, And leaves so stricken fell, Rang out your notes of cheer,— All’s well! All's well! All’s well! Exiled as ye must be, To wait Spring's warming breath, Your song gives hope to me; Aye, e’en this is not death ! Our best loved flowers but sleep, As on @ mother’s breast Wrapped in its slumber deep A tired child would rest. Our birds have taken wing, But in a fairer dell I know to-day they ring Their sweet All’s weil! All's well! And so my heart is strong To meet the days of gloom ; The days will not be long Before the Spring will come! When comes the cruel blast, And fierce the winds assail, Still ehall my lips repeat, God's love shall never fail! I am his very own,— Through days of shine and shade,— I never am alone,— I neveram afraid! When death shall come to smite, No human tongue can tell,— But His way is the right! All will, all will be well! — 2 om + ’ Choosing to Live in Srince, ——~ -—- THE ECCENTRIC TASTE OF A DESERTER FROM THE ENGLISH ARMY. William Rothwell was sentenced at Dedbam, Mass., on the 21st to the house of correction for six months. He was before the court at bis own request. He was neatly attired in a suit of blue, had on clean linen, an overcoat and boots carefully polished. His short, gray bair and whiskers were trimmed in a neat manner, whilehis bright eyes and fair complexion made him re- sewble a defaniting bank cashier who was being arraigned for embezzlement. It was ascertained that it was Roethwell’s eighteenth appearance in the same court in a period of about twenty years, Most of this time he has spent inside the walis of the house of correc- tion. He bas been sent there always at his owa request, on three months, six months aad once a year’s sentence, When he first went to Dedham he broke a gas Jamp in the presence of ap officer, who arrested him, and he was given three months. At the expira- tion of this sentence, and every other since that time, he would seek an offiver and tell him to complain of him for being a vagrant... He was born in England, and is fifty-eight years old. His parents and relatives are reapect- abie people, and occasionally Rothwell receives a draft for a small amount of money, with which he enjoys himself when out of prison. Inearly life he Jearned the trade of a tailor, “at. which he worked a few years, and then en- listed in the Naglish army, from which he deserted and fled to this country. He has a sister in England who is blind but who frequently writes a letterto her brother in his prison home. While in the house of correce tion, Rothwell employs his time in making and mending the garments worn by his fellow prisoners. He is not allowed any more Jiberty than any other inmate, and consequently is not ailowed to converse, or break any of the prison rules. He has polished manners, and can converse fluently when allowed to do so. He detests lockups and those who patronize them, claiming that they are not kept seat enough for him. Consequently he will not apply at those places for lodging when out of jail. He is a strange map, apditisthought there is more con- necied with his early history than he cares to tell. -=_—e - -— A New Remedy for Sea Sickness. Dr. Nord writes to the British Medi- cal Journal :—‘“Having noticed in the Journal of September 26th some re- marks on the use of cucaine in sea sick- ness by Professor Muhassien, [ thought I would follow his directions in the case of my sop, aged 24, who was about to sail for Calcutta, and who on former voyages had suffered excessively from sea sickness. I gave him a_ solu- tion of hydrochiorate of cucaine (1 in 1,000). He started on October 5th, und writing from Port Said, reports as follows: ‘Sailing on Monday, I was ill ou Tuesday night and Wednesday morul PG but quite well between the tracks, Once more, when the weather was very rough and the ship rolling terribly, i felt squamish, but two teaspoonsfal of the = cu- caine put me all right.’ He adds ‘I have missed only three regular meals, but had mine at these times on deck. Quly one other passenger has suifered lese than I have ; all the others have been very iil. Other voyages I have always been the worst on board, and I think the cucaine must have the credit of the improvement., Other letters have been received, buat as no mention is made of any return of the Meledy, we couciude he has remained wel,” —~—~eaipe -—-—.- Neglected calumny soon expires ; show tuat you are hurt, and you give it &-appeareuce Oi trutb. 5A whole secret of good manners is “do nuo0t0 others as you would that aan should do unto you” Fret Proor Sares at a bargain—New and Second-hand, at A.
