We believe this has speeded up settlement to a certain extent and is otherwise proving a more satisfactory ar- rangement than the former prac- tice followed in the preceding years. Grading "A rather disquieting condition is exhibited in the grading report for the past sea:on. During the year 16,885 hogs were marketed (exclusive of sows) averaging ap- proximately 151 lb=.. each, carcass weight. 57 per cent were within the choice weight, and of these 43.1 per cent graded selects. 43 per cent of the total shipped were outside the weights. “Comparing this Willi la-t year we find that out of a total of l3.- 549 hogs, averaging 156 lbs., each carcass weight, 56 per cent were within the choice weights and 61.8 per cent thereof graded select. 40 per cent of the total shipped were outside the weights. That is. there were 18 hogs less out of every hundred within the desired weights, graded select in 1936-37 than alas the case last year. Had we maintained la=t years grading record we would have had 1728 more selects than there actually were. At $1.00 a head premium this represents $1128.01 loet on this one item. In addition. the cuts imposed on off weight hogs, at the usual average per head. shows a filrther loss of $6,150.00. Taking these amounts together, we find approximately an $8,000.00 loss. that might well be avoided, by marketing better finished hogs. at a marketable weight. Lambs "Lamb handling for the year shows a further decline. both u to numbers and gross value. although the price per cat, was higher than years. It is difficult to estimate whether the usual percentage of lambs was marketed co-operative- ly or otherwise, but it is the opin- lamb industry is experiencing a rather serious decline. gradual but sure. and its present status and tendency constitutes a problem ihat mut br- coped with. if the industry is to be saved from ulti- mate extinction. (Tattle "F07 thr- pnst number of years the Marketing Board has been anxious to assist farmers. who pro- duce beef cattle. to find access to a wider range of markets than the rather restricted Olitieti hereto- fore at their dlspwaL We have continually endeavored to induce buyers from without the Province to become interested in this pro- i in co- I duct. Early in the year. operation with a representative of the Provincial Government, we succeeded in persuading an inter- nationally known packing concern to send a representative to this Province to look the situation over and estimate its posibillties. "Since that time. approximately 1.000 head of cattle found their way to a market that was rarely. if ever. open to our far-mere. with the result that the price immed- iately soared frcm the usually low prevailing levels to a point ullthin reach of the higher markets oi Canada. Our better grade of beef cattle was greatly appreciated by this concern. but representation was made to the effect that a much larger percentage of our so called beef cattle should be better finished. in order that our farm- ers may be able to cater in greater measure to the requirements of discriminating markets. Weaner Pigs "Some attention has been de‘ voted to the marketing of weaner pigs again this year. and while the total shipments will possibly. be lower than that. or last year, yet we feel that. the RCUVHIOS of i the Board in this connection have been instrumental in maintaining a higher price level than other- wise would be the case. had the matter been left to the Ordinary channels of trade. We have been to which we cater, and have a small margin of profit to show on this transaction. "The Nova Scotla and Cape Breton markets did not material- ize to the same extent that we an- ticipated earller in the season. and we attribute this mainly to the fact that these importing centres of other days are catering more to their own needs and this spring produced and distributed a large percentage of their young pi: re- quirements. This condition may he- come more aggravated as the years go by. and it may be said that the same possibilities apply in con- nection with our weaner pig trade with Newfoundland. It is our can- did oplnion that farmers who breed and produce springs export. may find it rather difficult to di5p0‘e of any large quantities. It is only natural that these countries should endeavour to produce their own requirements, rather than pay the high price that is being usual‘; asked for Island pigs. Feeds "The high price of null feeds last fall uudoilbzrdh" had a coll- siderable effect on the lack of quality and finish of hogs being shipped to the packing plants.
