While in my hammock, at mine ease, Retlections, on things small and great, Were hannting me: And spring notes from the leating trees, (Some wild bird caroling his mate) Enchanting me. Adown the road, near by, went two: A pair, from whom came cruel words, And muttering, Till far away. Then ceased the woo— I just had heard: instead, the birds Went fluttering. The angry couple passed along, When silently the birds return To vote it down. While I (translating from their song) Heard rhyming, like a dark infern, And wrote it down. The passing curses of that pair Yet lingered, like the ember coals Of fuel, ground. Or like long echoes piercing air, Still gathering, their angry tolls Of cruel sound. How angry words cay slaughter, And make the spirt moan, Like lictie d:ops of water, That wear tue hardest stone. The smallest threads, when twisted, May tie a hangman's knot :— And cruel words enlisted, May death to life allot. And tiny sands of ocean, May bare a harbor’s mouth ;— As cruel words in motion Silt up love's going forth. And solar rays of Heaven, (concentrate), may destroy ; But cruel words, un-leaven The very heart of joy. From little sparks of fire, A town may cease to be :— But little words of ire Wreck all fraternity, RETSGAB. Onset, Mass., ea QU siiN's BIRTADAY. May 16, 1887. ~TEAMER Princess of Wales wil! leave S.
