It is necessary that hon genilemen should be aware of this fact in order to explain the expression in this letter, ‘] could not help myself,’ that M: Pineau had been unfortunate in bus! ness and was indebted to some Ver: strong politicians in the province, ane the first thing that was done was tw pounce upon him and seize his cffect> and sell them under the hammer, and the next st2p was to approach him through the instrumentality of Dr. Wickham to offer him five dollars a day to goto Paris, This is what the evidence, which cannot be gainsaid in the slightest particular, goes to show. go to Paris? my hon. friend will see by this time that he fully thought he was going to Paris, and some people fully intended to send him to Paris. Bridgewater. declaration I have read all show that this was the case. For some reason best known to thoseZwho were cone ducting this intrigue from beginning te end. Pineau was not sent to Paris. He was taken across the line, into the land where a good many other people | with whom political machines have dealings go. He passed over to the United States and remained there un- tii the month of May, when he was {| brought back to Prince Edward Island, when he entered the provincial legis- lature and voted in direct opposition to the principles on which he had been | elected only a few months previously. The conclusion is inevitable, that he country, by this promise of being sent to Paris. He was breught to Ottawa and put in a damaging position before his former friends and betore the country which was irreparable, as far as he was concerned. He found him- self in that position, and having gone so far, he was induced to go still further. At first, all that was intended by those who were conducting this intrigue was that he should be got out of the country, so that his vote should not be recorded during the sitting of the legislature, but out of that evolved a still bolder ane stronger proposition, which was the one that was carried out, that he should go back to Prince Ed- ward Island and vote for the party that inveigled him away from the duty he owed to his constituents. I would submit one other declaration on this subject before 1 resume my seat. It is a declaration by Mr. James W. Shea, of Waterford. He is the gentleman to whom Pineauaddressed the'letter which I have already read, and Mr. Pineau's letter wil} show that he at least regard- ed Mr. Shea asa very honourable man, whom he trusted to look atter little affairs of business for him in hisabsence. Pineau said to him: ‘ You get your men boarded at our place and get what you want, and I know you will do what is aight...
