He said it meant cut- ting down the number of em- ployees. in his case from 23 to ll. Only about two taxis are left in the City as operators. he stat- ed. the rest were turned over to the drivers. The drivers buy their own cars and he feared that the expenses were so high that every taxi cab in Charlottetown would he owned by the car dealers in 12 months. Coun. Gormley brought up the matter of people coming in from the country and operating a taxi during the winter and Old Home Week. Mr. Acorn stated that this was the case and that all these people had to do was pay It 315 license for and go into business tluring the plush periods. I ,. He reported that both the Northumberland Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence were free of ice -and that fishermen would have the all-clear for the open- ing of the ' ' season today. Closing date of the ice patrols this year are the second " t on record. The earliest. was 1949 when he wound up his patrols on April 26. in contrast last year's patrol on May 13 was the latest in six years.
