TER squirming of the the Government im re- spect to the meat contract for supply of the Hospital for the Insane, etc, was at once pitiful and amusing. Our Minister of Public Works was compelled by the Leader of the Opposition to submit the tenders» showing that the loweat—those of Wheatley Brothers, Mr. Maurice Blake, and Messrs. Saunders & Campbell—had been presed ver in favor of a pélitical friend, and he was constrained, when he did so, to point out that the late Government, aiso, had not accepted the lowest tender. The Leader of the Opposition at once showed that there was a good and sufficient reason evidenced by the reports of Dr. Blanchard and others, on record—why the late Gov- ernment did not accept the lowest tender snd that this reason could not possibly be sdduced by the present Government as an excuse for rejecting the tender of Mr. Maurice Blake. The tenders received by the present Government were those oi — Wheatley Bros. 35 9 per 100 Ibs, Maurice Blake.... 6 00 Saunders & Campbell 6 25 : ; Mr, Sellers, ...... ‘ 6 45 s $2 Mr. Bat A. a 6 50 ot Mr. McNeill... 7 00 me A Lee 7 00 ae Mr. Drake 7 50 ee Mr. Henderson.......... 7 50 lian. First, he pointr- ed out that Mr. Sellers’ price was consider- ably lower than, that at which the late Goy- ernment had obtained its meat supply in the previous year, forgetting, of course, that that was the year of the hay famine, und that good beef was consequently high. erthan it was this year, forgetting, too, and that Mr. Blake supplied the iate Government with that the price of beef varies, for one year at $5.50 per hundred pounds. He freely exerted skill in the elaboration of the funny plea that it was Mr. Blake's policy to drive other butchers out of the competition (don’t you see /) and then to come in and “‘scoop” How very un- beef his forensic the contracts at high figures ! successful Mr. Blake was in this, is ent bythe list of teaders which we now appar: publish. To cap the climax of ths ridicul- ous, the Premier justified the desl with Mr. Sellers, and the rejection of the lower tenders of Mr. Blake and Messrs. Saunders & Campbell, by saying that the Govern- ment wanted to prevent Mr. Blake from monopolizing the meat supply business and to show that ‘‘ail the butchers are on the same basis 1” = A Smoot Sxin.—Estey'’s Fragrant Philo- derma is strongly recommended for softening, beautifying and preserving the skin, and giving it a blooming and charming appearance. lt completely removes tan, sunburn, redness, ete., and by its balsamic and healing qualities renders the skin soft, pliable and free from iryness.
