Bel- . beautiful. Our trip to Toledo from ting up out of the water. It sure ooks beautiful and has been called i- visitors from abroad “The Gar- den of the Gulf." Garden is a fitting name, for it is exclusively a farming country, hav- ing been under cultivation for years, the farmers having passed it on to their sons from away back and in any cases divided the land tokeep the family at home. The trouble is that the Island is so small and there being no other industries that it is hard to keep the young people at home. many of them going to the tates and all parts of the world. The Island has been noted for its potatoes, oysters. lamb and dairy products. They are now raising a grass seed for golf courses that has been in good demand in England and other places. They are also shipping seed potatoes to the South- ern States, West Indies and other places. Although the season isvery short the products seem to ripen and they get good results and all seem to be. prosperous and happy. One thing to their advantage is that "they do not rush as we do and wear themselves out before their time. I should speak oi’ the fishing which has been a large industry in recent; years. Mackerel. codflsh, lobsters} smelts. trout, herring are some of the fish caught. - 5 The Island has an Ideal summer climate, more people going there each year. We were more taken, with its beauties this trip than uni any previous trip. It has a rolling country with deep valleys and abun-;‘ dance of ‘waterways. As one drives over the country, going up in the hills there are so many places tosee,’ the countryside for miles sloping to_ some body of water; the trees, cuIti-i vatcd land, cattle grazing. all makw ing a wonderful picture. especially at this time of the year. I Communication with the Island has been a difficult problem because of its location. 9 to 40 miles from thc main land across the Northumber- land Straits. The best way to get to the Island by auto is on the car fer- ry. The ferry holds 12 freight cars and going in an automobile you must run on flat cars fitted up for carrying them. You are hauled the same as other freight cars and put on the boat by switch engine. In about one hour's time you are driv- ing on to the slip on the side. The; ferry runs from Cape Tormentinc; in New Brunswick to Cape Borden; on the Island side. The Island; forms one of the three provinces called the Maritime Provinces. We are now in Buffalo. N. Y..;‘ and arrived there on October the 19th. I will bring this already too‘ long letter to a close with a brief i outline of how wc came here. We; crossed int/b the United States nt; Calais, Maine. coming north from‘ Portland through the White and; Green Mountains in N. 11.. and Vt. We crossed Lake Champlain near Plattsburg through the Adirondacks via Lake Placid, Saranac Lake. Potsdam, Watertown, Oswego. Roch- ester and Buffalo. . This has been the best trip we have taken. So far we have enjoyed the beautiful scenery all along the way. We are at a loss now to tell which state or province is the most Florida was very interesting, especi- ally through the Shenandoah Val- ley. We are anxious to get to our home In Florida. In a few days we will be in Toledo, pack up. say good- bye to our friends, then, on the road again. Trusting you and yours arc all well. and that Titusville and Florida as a whole are cominl liisi- er than ever. We remain yours. R. B. A: E. M. Brehaut.
