The supple- ment has an excellent portrait of the Hon. _W.S Fielding, Premier of Nova Scotia. — The Fnglish newspapers are still dis- cussing the suggestion made by the Bishop ‘of Chester that the Gothenburg method of dealing with the liquor question should be jadopted by Parliament. The fi:st obj -ction ‘to thé scheme is that it would ‘involve the | purchase by government of 126,000 Lquor saloons at a cost of $500,000,000. he other objec ions need not Le considered. — We learn that the publishers of the Dominion [lustrated Monchiv intend is- suing a very handsome Christmas Number about the end of November. It will be a lurze work, comprising literary articles by p omiment Canadian litterateurs, all richly illustrated, and supp!emented by three large colored works of art, one of waich— ‘* The Rise and Fall of a Canadian Politic- ian’’—is bound to be a great hit. We await the publication of this holiday issue with much interest and feel confident that \it will be @ brilliant success. — The New York Sun, in a comparison | between Gladstone and Blaine, says: ** In | What our correspondeat calls ‘all-round lintelligence or scholarly attainments,’ | Gladstone is greatly the superior of Blaine. iIn many branches of knowledge about which Blaine knows nothing, or hardly anything, Gladstone is a learned man. As an all-round scholar he is unsurpassed by any man in the world, and perhaps he is the formost living man, a man without an equal, in general scholarship, 4 man who, in that respect, stauds superior to any other politician who ever lived.” Which is all very well, but who else would have thought of comparing the men / Farming Interest at Souris. A large and influential meeting, over which Me. Andrew Mooney presided, was held in the Agricultural Hall at Souris, on the 14th inst., for the purpose of consider- ing the advisablility of establishing a cheese factory round the vicinity of Soaris. | Addresses were delivered by Mr. Dillon, ‘superintendent of the New Dairy Station, | Cyrus Shaw, M. P. P., and others. Mr. Dillon in the course of his address clearly showed how the manufacture of cheese has ben, and can be successfully carried on in this Province. He strongly advised farmers to abandon their present system of farming and to devote more attention to stock raising and cheese-making. The various points in reference to the establish- ment of a cheese factory were fully dis- cussed and the different questions put to him were satisfactorily answered. He strongly recommended the growing of corn, showing how it can be successfully grown and commenting en the satisfactory results attending the different experiments con- ducted throughout the Island. Having given detailed instructions on the manner of feeding milch cows, and having shown from scientific reasons, the crops (such as vetches, peas and fodder corn) best adapted for the purpose, he closed his highly ap- preciable lecture. He was succeeded by Mr. Shaw, who de- livered a very interesting and intelligent dis- course. Like his predecessor he travelled the road of agricultaral science, and from a scientific and fiaancial standpoint snowed the advantages accruing from the erection of a cheese factory in the neighborhood. He fully explained the principles upon which the run- ning of New Perth dairy station, of which he is the President, has been and is being based, and the success that has attended its patrons for the past year. He exhorted everyone to aid ix pushing the matter forward, assuring the farmers, if they still cling to the old sys- tem of farming, that the ille of poverty and the stings of famine would soon settle per- manently on our fertile tields. After a brief discussion relating to cheese and general agricultuce, @ committee was ap= pointed to capvase the various <Gistricts, which committee will meet at Rollo Bay Hall on Oct. 27th to report upou the ‘results that will crown or tarnish their efforts. Judging by the enthusiasm displayed by ali present, we venture to predict that the vicinity of Souris will be able to boast ere long of a cheese factory, and, while we fer- vently cherish the hope, let us recall the words of the poet,— ** Let us then be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait,” Souris, Oct, Ud, —_———_—_—______—0+9<-o—— SHKODA’S DINCOVERY, the Great German-American Rem- 7 A for Heart, Nerves, Liver, neys, Blood. Turf, Farm and Field reports that there is a good market for fine coach and carriage horses at prices that afford the breeder a good profit. A wel'smted pair of carriage horses, with style and grace, will command a gvod price and the breeder will realize much more cash and fame than he would from « pair of second or third rate trotters. But breeding coach or carriage horses is a business by itself, and a man must understand it to succeed. Up to the 20th September, the get of the 155 developed sires had entered the 2.30 list for 1889. Lady Russel, sister of Maud S., now has three, representatives ia the 2.30 list aud isa new comer to the Great Broodmare table, The mau with good common sense will sue- ceed in the horse business, and indeed with apything he undertakes. Owners of trotting stallions without records and that have not sired speed will have hard work securing patranage for their horses next spring. The general public are almost all convinced that the way to get speed is to breed tospeed. Jf you own a stallion give him « record if possible. At Chilicothe, Ohio, Oct. 7, Martha Wilkes was driven by Budd Doble to beat ber reeord of 2.08. The tirst quarter was made in .30, the half in 1.0], three quarters 1,35 and the mile in 2 08. Now that the breeding of high-class trotters has assumed such proportions, the records have been cut down so low and the chances ot records are 80 uncertain is it not a good time for small breeders to look intu the mer- its of the coach horse and roadster breeds. There is always a demand for stylish, sizabie horses at paying rrices. ae Gene Shopping With My Wife. There is at least one lawyer in Detroit who tells the truth.
