Charleitetown, Dec. 29, 1882.—tf THE EXAMINER JOB PRINTING OFFICE HAS LATELY BEEN REPLENISHED WITH A Large Supply of Printing Types and Material Cape Traverse Railway will be proceeded with early in the spring, | am glad to notice that the location of the road is nuw being discussed ia the press. [agtee with your sumimerside correspondent, ‘* Prince County” chat ‘the route hich shall produce the greatest amount assertion that it would ‘‘producs the greatest amount of traffic, and accommedaie the greatest number,’ His silence on that point 1s Very signifisant, and shows clearly that no such proof can be adduced, if it could, we man dues not take a broad, general view of the | it trom a narrow, sectional stand poiut. vnly reason hoe gives why the County Line route should be selected is, that when the brauch Ine is completed, Summerside will have no steamer, ‘she Point Fu OChene route! would be abandoned, and the Capes route} woukl be the one the westera end of the} island would have to fail back on.”’ all this comes to pees, he predicts the speedy ruin aud decay of the thriving little town of sammerside, Ajas, poor Summerside, accord ing to ‘* Prince County” you have seen your paimiest days. I venture to say, however, that the iat llizent citiz us of Summerside wili not bs seriously alarm -d by the prediction of the political Wigyins that has risen in their midst to eulybten them on the subj-ct of ranch Railways. The public wili, I think agree with me that th+re is not much reason or probability iu ‘‘Prince County’s” argument and much less truth in his predictions. Every person knows that Summerside is the prine:pal port of export for Priuce County, and will continue to be so irrespective of where the branch line taps the main trunk. No matter which route be selected, Summerside will still be the outlet for Prince Couaty, and will require and undoubtedly have a steamer as usual to carry the surplus produce of that flourishing country to the markets of the main- land, Supposing the Branca was built to County Line, would Summerside cease to have a steamer, and the Point Du Chene route be abandoned on that account, as ‘‘Prince County” predicts. Net atall) Tam sure the merchants of Sammer- side would laugh at the idea of seudiag freight via Couuty Line t» Cape ‘Traverse (a distance vi thirty miles), re-shipping it there on beard a steamer, and {again re-shipping on boare the cara when it wonld reach the Cape formentine side, when they could ship by steamers direct from Summerside te Point Du Chene in lese! time than it would take it to reach Cape T:averse, and without tre cost and trouble of re-shipment. ‘To send freight from Summer- side va County Line to Cape Traverse would be a useless waste of time ard money, and the} merchants and business men of that smart little town are too shrewd and calculating to think of utilizing the Branch Line tu any ex- S i may assume that **Prince County” would be| Dr, only to happy to lay it before the public. } itis very evideut, however, thet this geotie-}*he Government will not hesitste ia adopting matter, but contents himself with discu>sing|™ert made The: hear Mr. Al ison in his report said thata good line could aot be yot by that route less than t jharbor which t* almost centrally situated i between these points and which is the wsiural loutlet for the intervening surrounding |districts would be an important feeder of the iime. It opers up one of the tinest ayricultural sections of the Provinee, and would, und ubtedly, produce *‘ the greatest amount «f traflic,”’ and probably be ths best paying branch on the Island. Last summer the Minister of Railways promised Jenkins to have the }ne sarveyed thie ‘pring, and when the survey is complet: df trast +} h; Here I wish to contradict a state- 1 ** Prince County "with refer- oy ence to the length «f thisliee Hesive “1 a 6 rouee, wenty six untes.” I be: to ieform!im thas Mr. A!lison never surveyed the line nor ever walked ever it, therefore I failto see how he conli make any such report. He simply When! spent afew hoars one aft fn°on walking over the livecin the visinity of North Wiltshire, When he was called away to Kast Poit. Here the matter rested and it is not likely that Mr Alison would uadertake t» report apon a line that he had nt even walked over. “It is a great leal more likely that*'Priuce County” is drawing on hia imayinativoa for his information aand his figures, It is only sixteen miles from-North Wiltshire to Cape Traverse, and when the survey is made in a few weeks I think it will be found that a good line can be got that will not much exceed this distance. **Prince Couaty,”’ in an alist bitter, sectional spirit calls upon the peonle cf his native County to “‘be up and doing.” I think, however, that they shoald not evince too much selfishness iv this inatter. They should on the contrary practice the golden rule, “*‘Do unte others as you would wish others to do to you,’ They should also rem*mber that it was the vote of the representative of Crapaud, Keily’s Cross, and Lot 30, that carried the Railroad Bill through the Local Legalature, and gave the santa Snake to Pciace Couaty. It is well known that the districts named were not benefited by the main line, yet they contr ibut- ed their quota of taxation towards it without a murmur, because they considered the Rail- real would benefits the Is!and generally. Prince County” should now show the sane epirt of liberality and fair play, and not seek to deprive the sotuhern section of the Island of the Railroad ace mod tion it so badly needs, i do not think the mojorivy of its inhabitants would countenan’e any such unfair agitation. | Neither do I believe that Mr. Hackett; would urge the adoption of the Couaty Liae rou‘e npou the Government, knowing that it would be little or no bevetit to Prince County. while it would be a serious disadvantige to Queen's aud King’s Counties, and a great injastice to the section of country lying between Cape ‘Traverse and North Wilt+hire. tent for freight or passenger traffic. The same may be said of Kensington, and any other} poiut in Priace County, As I have already) remaiked, Summerside will costinue to be; the priscipal port ef export for the whole Covnty, and a steamer will ply as usual be-| tween that port aad Point Di Chene. I am} told that, on several occasions last summer, the steamer was unable to carry all the freight) that was waiting shipment at Sunimerside. This sh »ws that, even ifjthe subsidy was with-| drawn, there would be sufficieut traffic to| induce a Company to place a boat on the; route; and, if a suitable one could noi be| obtained, I am sure there ia pleaty of capital | in Summerside, and enough eateryrise in her merchants and business men, to build a boat to ply between that port and Point Du Chene Such an iuvestment could not ful to prove a paying ove. I thisk I have clearly shown that, no matter which route bs adopted, the freight aad passenger traflic of Prince County will continue to go by Summerside. ‘The Puint Du Chene route will not be sbandoned. Therefore, it makes no materia) difference to the peeple of that County whether the Couaty Lise or North Wiltshire route be selected. Yours truly, Falg P.ay, Queen’s County, April 10, 1883. mom + Tu the Rditor of the Examiner. It is not my intention to discusa this matter froma sec ional ¢tandpvint. Ihave read the arguments of your correspondents in favor of fully cmsidering tie question, I am convinced that the public terest would be vest served if the proposed Branch Line tapped the P. Kb. It 18 ten miles shorter from Charlottetown to Cape Traverse via North Wiltshire than by County Line, consequently mails and passengers to and from Uape Traverse to Charlottetowa and all points east thereof could reach their destia- ation more expeditiously by the North Wilt- shire than by the County Line route.
