The;-e|was some months ago a report that Mr. Corby, member for VVest Has~ tinge, would resign his seat to make place for Hon. Mr. Foster. Mr. Corby has gone south on account of failing health, and in passing through Toronto said he was quite ready to resign if he thought the Government would brlngon the election promptly, but if he did resign it would not be in favor: of Mr. Foster, nor would the latter be likely to secure la nomina. tion there as his name had not been men- y tioned. Moreover West Hastings had never had an{outside representative and was not likely to want one naw, The St. John Telegraph as now a new editor in the person of Mr. H. F. Gadsby, who comes from Toronto, and has won some distinction as a parliamentary cor- respondent and magazine writer. He is the fourth to succeed to the position with- in about seven years past. Hitherto many newspaper men have gone from Eastern _Canada to the Western Provinces and have succeeded _in most instances very well. This has not been true of those who have come from the West to the Eist. We Sea no subicient reason, however why Mr. Gadsby may not prove a brilliant and first exception to the rule. Queen’s has been promptly issued and the election will be speedily held. Nomi- nation is tixedfor 13th March and polling one week later. Mr. McKinnon will again be the Liberal candidate and has announc~ ed a series of meetings, notices of which appear in another column of this issue. We persume that Mr. Martin will again be the conservative Candidate, but have as yet no positive information. We trust that this time in the best interest. of all concerned that the election law may be scrupulously observed. 1-* A correspondent calls attention to a method ot permanently marking the names of streets which has been adopted in cities of the United States within the past few years. The names are set in blocks of stone or cast iron and the blocks themselves set in the outer corners of the side walks flush with the surface. There are two objections to this method, the tirstcost and the fact that in the winter season the marks would be frequently covered with snow or ice.
