Falstaff was wont to say that he was not only witty himself but was the cause of wit in others. Prof. J. W. Robertson, Cauada’s Agriculture and Dairy Commissioner, has proved his great value to the Dominion not only by what he has himself done but by what he has incited others to do. He has entirely revolutionised the dairy industry of Canada, and made our country famous for cheese and butter. He has been a veritable apostle of better methods in agricul- ture, and cold storage. He has taught Governments how to legislate and administer in ,all that pertains to progressive farming, and he has done more than any ten other men in Can- ada to instruct our farming population in improved methods, and to show 'them in what direction their true in- _terast lies- Now Prof. Robertson comes to us l with a proposal, surprising in its gene- lroiiiy and which if diligently and 1 prudently carried out must greatly enhance the value of the teaching in our public schools. A modest bene- factor stands in the back-ground to supply the means, just as the Govern- ment was behind the improved dairy- ing movement. But in both cases Prof. Robertson has devised the plan _ and given direction to the power. ,All honor tothe princely benefactor. But honor must also be given to the Commissioner who knows so well how to devise plans for promoting the wel- .fare of the Canadians pe0ple. Manual training in schools is not a new thing. It has been tried in other countries and its utility has been con- firmed by experience. It has been advocated in many Canadian journals, and viewed with favor by some lead- ing educationists. But while it was in the air nothing was practically done to introduce it. Liberal grants were made for education in the Pro- vinces along the old lines, but no money was votfxi for new departures. The Governments did not move in 'the matter and the people were too inert to act upon a mere theory. Those who heard Prof. Robertson yesterday were doubtless all convinced of the value of manual training. The experience of the Mother Country, his own observation of its working l there, and his judgment as to the good effect that may result here will carry great weight with all. Prof. Robertson is not a man: of mere theories or “fads” He is eminently practical. Our thanks are due to liim for his apparent willingness that Charlottetown shall be the starting centre for manual training in the Maritime Provinces, and we shall hope to see the generous proposal promptly carried into eHect in our midst. It is a source of pride to every patriotic Canadian that productive industry, manufacturing, trade and mining are now most prosperous. A u important meeting -_vas to have been held yesterday at Moncton, at which Sir Louis Davies, Hon. A. G. Blair, Premier Farquharson and Hon. B. His friend was able and willing to carry out his proposal-pay for the lease of a building, pay the organizer and teach- eilect the recent legislation in regard to the Hillsboro Bridge and Belfast Railway. The action of President Loubet in convening the Senate of France as a High Court for the trial of treason- able conspiracy against the Republic, shows a situation of extraordinary gravity. No such measure has been ltakeu in many years. We are not told in our brief despatch whether oi- not the conspiracy is connected with the Dreyfus affair. There have been hints from time to time, however, that members of the army staH`, who were opposed to the re-trial of Drey- fus, have been plotting a revolution: It is not improbable that this is 'the n Se ate, and the arrest of prominent persons may follow in the near future.
