It is an interesting study to note in domestic animals the traits of their wild ancestors. There are some charac- teristics, of course, which are readily cecognizable as being similar to those of animals still in a wild state, and fos this reason they give a fair idea of the life and surroundings of progenitors. The habits of the dog and cat are too familiar to comment on, but take the foal aud compare his traits with those at the calf. The foal wken afew days old can yallop as fast as he ever canin after life. He sever leaves the (am, and takes nourishment in small quantities, avoiding a full meal, which would im- pede swiftescape. In lying down no at- jempt is made at concealment, and when he stands his head is held high. These habits show that the animal's ancestors spent their lives in the open and not in the forests and that they were great travelers, The calf, on the contrary, fills him solf with milk, and isa poor traveler, When danger approaches, his first ine pulse is to conceal himself. He holds his bead low in order to look under the branches of the forest. All his charac- teristics point to the fact that the an- cestral home of cattle was in a moist, wooded country, while the primeval horse roamed the plains.—New York Times. Preferred a Soio. A gushing, sentimental gir! and her matter of fact aunt sat on a green hill- side, the aunt endeavoring to enjoy na- ture, while her niece discoursed of things far and near without @ noticeable pause for breath. At last she spoke of the beauties of the landscape at great length. ‘I love to listen to the music of that brook as it babbles on and on,’’ she said un- wisely. ‘“*Yes,’’ said the aunt, seizing her first opportunity, ‘‘the babbling of a brook is a pleasant sound, my dear. JI think I prefer it as a solo, however, rather than with another part. I don’t care so much for a babbling duet.’’ Then for a few delightful moments there was silence on the green hillside. —~—Youth’s Companion. Moody and the Sinless Man, Some time ago a man who claimed perfection went to Evangelist Moody and commiserated him on his low level of Christian experience. Mr. Moody in a kind manner asked his caller if he pever sinned nor did any wrong. “‘No; I have not sinned for years; neither have I done anything that was wrong,’’ was the prompt reply. ‘*Well, I'm glad to know it,’’ said Mr. Moody, ‘‘but before I am convinced I would like to ask your wife.’’—La- dies’ Homes Journal. What F Fiction Can Do. Gunners inside of a monitor turret suffer intensely from heat generated by the con- | . Xu ) cussion of the enemies’ cannon balls when they strike tho steel walls of the turret. The energy of visible motion is sudden- ly arrested and becomes molecular energy in the form of heat. The moving mass has communicated its motion to the mole- cules of the metal of the turret as well as of the cannon ball itself. All visible motion when arrested be- vomes heat, even that of running water. If we take two pieces of solid ice and rub them together, they can be heated by the friction until the melting point is reached. lf we should pour water into an ordinary rotary churn and turn the crank, the me- chanical energy exerted against the water will be transformed into molecular ener- gy, and the water will be warmed in pro- portion to the amount of mechanical ener- gy expended.
