Robertson, Liberal, by a small majority for the first of King's. The election here in the city and Roy- alty was conducted quietly and orderly. There was no excitement, but consider- able interest was taken in the contest. The whinlé strength of the liquor party was brought out against Dr. Jenkins, and it is significant that they were beaten, not by any means by the full strength of the reformers. After the close of the poll many of Dr. Jenkins’ supporters gathered in the committee rooiu in the Market Hall, where a few short speeches were given by the doctor and some of his friends. The doctor thanked the ilec- tors warmly for the handsome support Sunday, a victim of pneumonia. after ‘an illness of ten days. In his death New York losesfone of the most public-spirited men that ever lived within her borders. He was for many years Chancellor of the University of New York and at the same time pastor of one of the leading Presby- terian churches in the city. The duties of both positions did not, however, pro- veut his very active interest in municipal. government. To his exertions was due, to a great extent, the birth of the Society for the Prevention of Crime. Of Dr: Crosby's attitude toward the temperance movement we have expressed ourselves freely in times past. We care to ‘say now nothing more than that he was, ‘in our opinion, one of the most formidable enemies the cause of temperance has ever had. The return of two Liberals in seats formerly held by Conservatives leaves the local government in a minority of one. Before the bye-elections were rendered necessary the House stood. Government 16, Opposition 13, with one seat (J. M. Sutherland’s) vacant. It now stands, Government ~ 14, O; isition 15. The Hon. Premier McLe-id] being interviewed last evening on the situation, said that as to the effect of the bye-elections he could express no opinion as yet. As to a dis- solution of the House, this rested entirely with the Executive, and he could not tell anything about it till the Council met. Following are the returns so far re- ceived:— CEAltI.0l'1'l’!‘0WN mu iioiuixrf. stooped to double-dealing of any kind. c“n.ia ‘ - - ire B!-!!sle!!.- . S2-.!.-.99.. He was courageous and consistent, and, we are fully disp ~sed to believe, sinccn'e..- And we are optimistic enough to belfivc; that no true man ever fought for a sin-_i core conviction, no matter how erroneous, and fought by open and candid methods, without serving the cause of truth. For 13 years Dr. Crosby has been the foremost champion of the so-called “ re- strictive” method of treating the liquor traflic. He has been instant in season and out of season in the endeavor to com el the eiiforcementof the “restric- tive ’ laws. He has besieged the Legisla- ture indefatigably. He has had behind him the best backing. as respects wealth and social influence, and even nevispdper" co-operation, that the city could afford. And his crusade of 13 years has left this city more strongly dominated by the liquor forces than when he began. So far as all practical results of any signifi- cance are concerned, Dr. Crosby's war- fare in behalf of “ restriction and regula- tion” has been a stupendous failure. No man could have fought the battle more heroically or intelligently. The result ought to be convincing "that no man can- expect to light it hereafter along the same lines with any better results.— -The Voice. . . 78 .
