It is like so many other good things we have: we take it for granted. Yet it was centuries that the Jewish people waited for the Messiah, sometimes patiently, sometimes wearlly, even to the point of forgetting the pro- mise, and iorsaking the law of God. The Jews were a nation whose customs, laws, worship and men- tality bespoke expectsncy. waiting for the Saviour, the Holy One of Israel. One cannot read the history of the Jewish people, and the writings of the prophets without sensing the pathos of their hope. How many of them were born and died without seeing the Saviour. living a life sus- tained by hope. In some passages the Old Testament reads like the cry of men in darkness. "Stir up thy power 0 lord. and come to us who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death." "Drop down dew ye Heavens, and let the clouds rain the Just One: lot the earth be. opened and bud forth a Saviour.'1 sometimes we are touched by the) patience of a hopeful people "0; Lord, we have patently waited for Thee: Thy name. and Thy remem- brance are the desire of the soul," 8 0 I The kindness of God toward His chosen people led Him to speak to them at intervals through His pro- phets, to sustain their flagging hopes, and to comfort them. Hr kept the promise of the Saviour before their eyes, making the know- ledge of Him more and more explic- it, the prospect of His coming more and more comforting. "Behold a vir- gin shall conceive, and bear a son, and His name shall be called Em-I manuel." "Say to the fsini.heart- ed: Take courage and fear not . . . God Himscli will come and will save you." "Arise, be enlightened. 0 Jerusalem: For thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." And then. as though the Saviour had already come. 15- aias speaks out joyfully: "For a Child is born to us and a Son is given to us. and the government is upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful. Counselor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come. the Prince of Peace." The Prince of Peace: it is a beau- tiful title. The Angels caught it up the night the Saviour was born. and proclaimed it to heaven and earth: Glory to God in the high- est, and on earth peace to men of good will." The first blessing of the Incarnation was peace; peace be- tween God and man, between na- tion and nation, peace in the soul of each man or good will. HOWARD Open Every 175 (limo St. SHOES SLIPPERS OVERSHOES RIIBBERS Christmas. And so it comes about that the waiting and longing of our spiritual ancestors has given way to pescv and joy. We fullness of time, for Christ has come. and Christ is ours, when we renew the birth of the Saviour each year the peace and joy of His first coming are renewed in each of us. it is not just 1:. com- memoration, like our national birth- day. The celebration of Cliristmu is a new receiving of the grace of Christ's birth. Although Christ is not born again physically, the effects of the incarnation thril through the world in every heart good will ,taking our human na- ture. giving us divine nature. When we see Christmas in the Ulihh of Cifrist, then it has its deepest meaning and its deepest joy. Did you ever notice a stained- glass window with no light behind it? How dull and drab it seems, how lacking in richness or beauty. But when the sunlight filters through it, how radiant it becomes with blue and scarlet and gold, Christmas without Christ is like stained glass without light. Christ.- mas with the Light the World shin- ing through is splendidly rich and profoundly beautiful. see For all the celebration and all the joy which fill this time of year find their focus and meaning in the Incarnation. Human wisdom could not devise a plan like this, that God should become man, be born as a little child and laid in ii manger. It took the Divine Mind. and Divine Love to bring about such an event, so condescending, so appealing. Divine Love; would we not be blind indeed if we did not recognize it in the Christmas Feast and make A grateful return? It is possible to give gifts to one an- other and be forgetful that they are but the symbol of the tremen- dous gift God has given us: Christ. our Saviour? There is 9. wonderful thing sinut this gift that God has given to us. Christmas passes, the celebra- tion passes, the gifts we have re- ceived and given, pass away. Christ does not pass away. but remains In close friendship with us. as long as we wish Him to. For divine love is constant, and does not take back what it has given. one of the sav- l3ur's titles brings this out very well: Emmanuel. God with us. If we wish it. we will have the abid- ing presence of Christ at all times all through the year. It was this wish for Christ's abiding presence that Philips Brooks expressed so beautifully in his Carol: We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; 0 come to us, abide with us.
