McDenald passed a good day yesterday, and is much better this merning. It is expected that ten ef the smalli-pox patients who are convalescent will leave the hospital to-day, thus leaving only eleven cases under treatment. During the past week only two new cases were re- ported. Judge Feurnier, of the Supreme Court, with his family, has left for Berthier, his country residence. Last night, a three-year-old daughter of Mr. Augustin Vaudetta, who resides in St. Patrick street, met her death in rather a melancholy manner. It appears that her breiher, aged seven years, was playing with a revolver, and by some means it was (is- charged, the ball entering the head. The child has since died. THE ELECTION IN YAMASKA. Montreal, July 7 The election in Yamaska has resulted in the election of Mr. Vanasse (Conservative) over Mr. Goiun by 193 majority. UNITED STATES. Ricurorp, Vt., July 7. Miss Jessie Dunbar, aged 21, was walk- ing in the street at Mattewan, when some boys behind her threw a fire-crackar under her skirt, ind her clothing took fire ; she was burned in a horrible snanner and died this evening. A powder mill employe at Gambo Falls, Me., named Stephens, while trying to fire two reunds per minute last evening, was killed by the bursting of the cannon, which blew off both arms and tore his stomach out. = Chas. D. Brown, a Canadian, returned to New York from an excursion with his wife yesterday, and after reaching home, while Jboth were intoxicated, quarelled ; he struck her several times on the head ; ‘her injuries are fatal. Brown was jailed. Oliver B. Goldsmith, 76 years of age, a well-known New York professor of pen- manship, was shot in the back while stand- ing in front of his residence yesterday morning, by 2 »#y who was passing by. The boy ran away and has not been ar- rested. The wound is not considered dan- gerous. Mrs. Mary Anderson, of Williamsburg, New York, with a baby ene year old on her arm, attempted to light a fire with kerosene, when the can expleded, and the mother and child were badly burned. Her son, aged 6, leaped out of a window and fell to the sidewalk; he cannot recover. While making an excavation at Togban- nic Falls, near Trumansburg, New York a well preserved and petrified body was dis- covered 13 inches below the surface. Close ‘inspection showed that the feet were round and had claws like a paniher;.the dimen- | sions were 6 feet 3 inches loag, 18 inches across the shoulder; the head was large and the forehead prominent. Numbers are flocking to examine the bedy, and it bids fair to furnish a snbjectof study for scie n- tific men. MARINE. Lima, June 18, via New York, July 7 A report has prevailed of a battle at Calamar resulting in its capture frem the |Chilians by the Peruvians and _ Bolivians, the Chilians losing 1,500 killed. Four Chilian war vessels are reported blockading Iquique. A report was current en the 19th that the Peruvian iron-clad ‘‘ Huscar” had dis- abled the Chilian frigate ‘*‘ Blance Encala- da” in an engagement, and that two Chilian corvettes had gone to Valpariso for re- pairs. Large numbers of the inhabitants of Iquique have left in fear of bombardment. Twelve thousand rifles and six million cartridges have been landed for the Beliy- ians at Arica. Vessels at Callao have been ordered to anchor further outside to avoid the cress fire from the forts. There are 177 vessels at Callao, and efforts are being made to de clare the guano islands neutral. RUSSIA. Lonpon, July 7. A Berlin correspondent draws a gloomy picture of the state of Russia, owing to the Nihilists, the failure of the crops and the ravages of the corn beetle. Advices from the City of Mexico say that on the 26th ult. the crew -yef: the Mexican war steamer Liberta, in the harbor of Vera Cruz, mutinied and seized the steamer while the commander was on shore, and, simultaneonsly, some officers of Vera Cruz Garrison attempted to raise a revolt at the instigation of some discontented persons. Nine mutineers were killed. The Liberta went to sea, and the war steamer Jindepen- dencia has gone in pursuit. All the Vera Cruz merchants are hostile to the Govern- ment on account of the passage of the law against the contraband trade, and, ever since, they have been in a state of quasi re volt Kinesron, Jamaica, July 7. Lonpon, July 7. - A Cape Town despatch of June 15 says Cetew ayo occupies an impregnable position on the north east of Ulundi. The Tugela column advances on the 20th. The Ninety- first Regiment has evacuated. Fort Chelmsford and it will defend the frontier and be combined with the advance shortly. A telegram frem Chelmsford, received at the War Office to- day, states that Cetewayo has not yet yiekled to the proposals made to him. GERMANY’S NEW TARIFF. Lonxpon, July 7. A eishibit to the ‘‘Post” from Berlin says prospects now regarded certain of early adoption of high protective tariff caused merchants.,to import large quanti- ties of goodsin advance, so as to escape increased duties. Bismarck in face of serious objections, insists upon increase in duty on foreign. corn. ‘“Times’” corres- pondent at Berlin says: Tariff will prob- ably be completed on Saturday, the 12th inst., when it is intended to prorogue Reichstag. Liberals and Socialists inade desperate stand against duties on coffee and petroleum, Herr Babel declaring that they would breed much discontent and furnish fresh stimulus for Social and Democrat agitation. Berwin, July 7. The National Liberals, except twelve, de- cided to vote against Tariff bill, but this is not likely to affect result. ES A TLE TO Mysterious MURDERS are becomming very common in New York. On the morning of the 4th July an old gentlemen named Sdey- mour, who resided in the General. Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church, New York, was found dead on the grounds of that institution with a pistol shot wound in his breast. No one can tell who killed him or why he was killed. He is supposed to have been shot by some tramp that he was driving off the grounds.j
