'l‘he people of Kelly's Cross parish
enloyed a rare treat last Wednesday
evening when they listened to a lec-
ture delivered by Rev. Dr. Smith on
his recent trip through Ireland. The
lecturer and his subject were both
drawing cards, and the spacious hall
was filled to the doors when Dr.
Smith appeared on the platform at
8 p. in.. In the first part of his
lecture he gave a brief sketch of the
history of Ireland, which naturally
proved more interesting to his hear-
crs, since it was nothing else than
the history of their forefathers. In
connection with the story of Columb-
kille's life and labours he gave an
interesting account of his visit to
the island of Iona whose famous
monastery was founded by the saint
as a missionary centre from which
his monks went forth to clvillzc and
christianize the Scottish peoples. He
also dwelt at some length on his
visit to the counties Monaghan,
Tyrone and ("iivau, whence almost all
the first settlers of Kelly’s Cross
parish rainc, and whore many of
their relatives are still to be found.
He then led them in spirit through
the various places of interest lic had
visited in other parts of Ireland -
boiigli Derg and St. Patrick's Pur-
gatory; Gleudalough with its sevcn
churches; The Vale of Avoca, of
which Moore sang so sweetly; Limer-
ickffamous for its -defence by Patrick
Sarslield, and for its Treaty "broken

by Dominick McDonald, who pleas-
