An this we call a ‘‘loss,’’ O selfish sorrow Of selfish hearts ! O we of little faith ! Let us look round, some argument to borrow should wait the morrow succeed this night of Why we in patience That surely must death Aye, look upor this dreary desert path, The thorns and thistles whereso’er we turn; W aat trials and what tears, what wrongs and wrath ! What struggles and what atrife the journey hath ! They have escaped from these; and lo ! we mourn. Ask the poor sailor, when the wreck is done, Who, with his treasures, strove the shore to reach; While with the raging waves he battled on, Was it not joy where evi ry joy seemed gone, To sce his loved ones landed on the beach ? A poor wayfarer, leading by the hand \ little child, had halted by the well Te wash from off her feet the clinging sand, And tell the tired boy of that bright land Where, this journey passed, longed to dwell | iong they When lo! the Lord who many mansions had, Drew near, aad looked upon the suifering twain. I caught the Duke of Cambridge the other day ina funoy position. I had business with an aid-de-camp, and ip a mi:tike went into the Duke’s room. He had his easy toggery on and was ut the window looking upon the park and grounds of Marlborough House; and, ob, shocking, making signals apparent- ly of a most affectionate character to a young lady at an opposite window. In the ardor of his signalling business the Duke had not heard my footsteps on the carpet, and I thought the best thiog I could do was to discreetly and silently back out. As I did so the lady leaned forward and the sun shone on her face, and | recognized the Princess of Wales, who with some of the young- sters, was sitting in a sort of exposure enjoying a bit of gossip by signal with the old warrior on whose every move- ment at that moment the eyes of all Karope were figuratively supposed to be resting. Instead of singing warrants creating armies to march forth to destruction, the old body was diverting himself in his peculiar and unique manner with the young folks of the royal family. I afterward learned a regular code of signals had been established by the Field Marshal by which he could communicate with the Prince or Princess. He sits facing the window, und the moment Albert Kiward or Alexandra appears up he jamps. “Are you comming over to have a bit of tenderloin?” asks Albert Edward. “Afraid I shan’t be able,” replies the Commander _in-chief. ‘*There’s such a lotto do. Hartington is coming up directly and he’s such a deuce of a fellow, with his wanting to know, and his parliamentary questions. But Vil tell you directly. Did you say onloos or mushrooms?’ “Oh, fie ’re- sponds the Princess ; “mushrooms, of course.” “Oh, woll that decides it,” says the Duke ; “if 1 can’t have beefsteak and onions I’m sot coming over.” Albert and Alexandra confer. “It’s all right,” signals Albert : “onions it iss You better say ‘yes. “Well, Hartington may go hang; Vl be over in an hour.”” And down go the windows. —London Letter. we reach the heavenly Pe a Special Notices. , on : ° . ,’, ‘ a aaeee this evening at J, B.
