Best Entertainment in Town As a student at UPEI in the early 70’s, one of my. fondest memories is of times spent in the Ice Palace, cheering on our Hockey Panthers. In those days, it was rare that we’d even make the finals. Yet, Panther hockey was enthusiastically followed by university students as a regular social activity. Campus Char- acters would plot all week plan- ning crowd-pleasing antics, and no one wanted to miss the dis- play. Cheerleaders, musicians, and overall clowns would enter- tain the masses almost as much as ( and occasionally more than ) the action on the ice. Since graduating from UPEI I have become involved with the UPEI Hockey Booster Club. Wow, have things changed for the last few years, not only have we been regularly making the Play— offs, but for most of the time have been ranked nationally. The calibre of hockey is superb, and the fan no longer has to endure the torture of the Ice Palace. Intercollegiate Scoreboard With all the positive changes, one would think the team’s sup- porters would increase in quanti- ties. However, attendance seems to have shifted from a student majority to a following of City residents and Alumni members. I feel this shift can be attributed, to a large degree, to a greater em- phasis on academic achievement necessitated by the competitive job market forced by most grad- uates today, as a university de- gree no longer ensures employ- ment upon graduation. However, everyone needs a break from the books and what better time than now? Midterms are weeks away, finals are months away, and Jan- uary is usually such a boring, de- pressing month. So... how about a little entertainment? The UPEI Hockey oe Booster Club and UPEI Stu- ) dent Union have collaberated to . sponser a Student Night begin- } ning at the Charlottetown Fo- ) rum, Friday, January 20 at 7:00 { pm, when the Panthers host the Mount Allison Mounties. Stu- dents, Faculty and friends of the university are heartily invited to join in the fun and frolic of expressing their support of the Hockey Panthers in the noisiest/ showiest manner they can think of, and immediately following the game, to join the Panthers in a post-game party at the Panther Lounge. For details on return transportation from the campus to the Forum, consult your Stu- dent Union office. Hope to see you there!
