' by: "arch 8th 1972,a meeting ,of the U.P.E.I. Senate was 0 *held in the Faculty Lounge of Rain Building. This gethea 'ring was as disinteresting to the casual observer as the previous meeting had been. But the thrill of being a student and allowed into the sacred sancutery of the Fec- ulty Association is in itself ‘aleost reason enought to.sit through the meetings. 1 The first discussion con- cerned Senior Week and Pres- ident Baker talked about the choice of speakers for the Convocation ceremonies it was decided that/Senate would approach certain famous Can- adians whose names must re- main confidential untill they have been asked to app- ear. ‘ The next order of busi- ness was a proposal by\Mike NO Rem -MORAN ‘xft mam. within «tugs . -' ' of 80% or higher be allowed to challenge for up to 30 hours or five credits of .Freshman level Coureee. This‘ would mean that those people who qualified could at the time when our Supplementary Exams are being written(the and of August and the first of Saptember)also write Exams designed by the diff- erent Departments to disco- ver if they need to take Freshman Year or if they can recieve credit for it and begin as Sophomores as -.p,£.!. Professor Galloway of the Modern Languages Dept brought up two very inter— esting pointe;1 What about Students From outside P.E.I. take for example the people from Quebec who already have a good knowledge of French are they to do freshman level and receive credits for work which they already know? 2_what is the university to do about payment from those people who skip their Fresh- man year? In answer to the first question Senate decided that that it would have to be up to the different Departments to ensure that students were learning in their courses and not merely taking an easy Credit. In regards to the next query President Baker stated that these students would be treated as Transfer Students ledge elsewhere ,therefor ‘since U.P.E.I. had not given then anything but a testing of that knowledge the Univ- ersity could not in good faith charge them anything for its Senate then.went ahead and passed the motion but with the reservation that the program would come up for review at the end of a two year trial period. . The other matter of bus- iness discussed was concernigg the enterance scholarships which the University uses to entice good Students to come to this University. As there are only 22 of these wonder— ful objects the Senate felt that any scholarships balono ging to some other class which has lapsed will be taken from that class and given to the Freshman Class. In conclusion 1 would like to inform anyone who doesn't know, that the Senate records and distributes the minutes of their meetings so ,if anyone is interested they -can read the OFFICIAL report and find out more of the deg tails. This column is designed to give a personal view in the hope that Students will gain a better‘idea of how th theirUniversity is governed.
