- lock talk pithy plies What was certainlyjthe largest crowd ever to witness a Panther Basket— ball game was quite dis- appointed last Saturday afternoon in our gym as the Acadia Axemen demon— strated, quite clearly, ' why they are considered to be the #1 team in Canada,_ As the game end— ed 81363 with their players jubilantly extending one finger up in the air, to indicate their rating, few spectators would have offered much disagreement. The game was televised so that many students and the general public who were unable to gain access to the jammed and inadequate space, where our team a plays, were able to enjoy (7) the excellent pre— formance by both teams. While at least two Panthers (Dennis High and Mark Vickers) were not Up to par, physically, the wide Acadia advantage in scoring seems to be too great for us to offer a convincing alibi. Their shooting was fantastic (Their first six field shots swished in) and their rebounding, particularly by that Ed Shannon, really‘cqntrolled “ the play except for a few' brief intervals. We did not have go. shooting and several times the ball Seemed to defy gravity and seemcto struggle to get Out of the hoop. However, there will be another day.. that to take precedence in the playoffs in case we 'finish with identical records. Besides this contest we still play Dalhousie here and Saint Mary's and Acadia'on the road. We thought the Pantherettes a very much improved team as they lost to the ’Axettes by 20 points with :Sheri Stearns being high ‘scorer for us. On Sunday they won their second game in league play as they , nosed out-the U. de Moncton Blue Angels 63-60. Sandra 'Drysdale led the way with ._J‘ 22 points backed up by Sheri Stearns who had 18 and Sharon MacLure with 13. The Premier and local information media are’ stressing "Enersave" these days. We wonder if they have given any consideration to bottling the excess energy dis- played by Sandra Drysdale who, we think, puts more of herself into a game than any other athelete on campus. It seems to pay off too. . In hockey we did extre— mely well in Fredericton by garnering foUr points from the U.N.B. Red Devils with a squad that was hard hit by_injuries. In the first game we were additionally handi— capped by having to play with Larry Arsenault side— lined by a league ex— ecutive ruling and having to aCt as a spectator due to a one ;game mis— conduct suspension. Who, Larry??? However we man— aged to eke out a 5—4 win with Bob Mitchell, Ken Burton, Joe Polyfienny, Wilfred MacDonald and Lennie Kelly counting for our depleted and suf- fering invalid squad. The -Le§ai§M§elly, Val and ' BobTMitchell getting singles and Ken Burton chipping in with two. It was a great weekend for Mr.& Mrs. Burton who travelled from LGhate uay ato Fredericton to see the pride of the Burton house- and everybody starts off even'ho1d preform and they in the playoffs in which we have an excellent chance t0 enter in second place. In this game out high SCOrees: writs Mark Vickers With 16, closely followed by Tom Kappos and Ken . Rowe with 14 each. The game in our gym this Friday night with St. FX. looms Very large in our schedule és they have beaten us once, 1n league play, by one point 'and We must win by more than 'probably impelled him to come up with his best .‘p: ormances of the season wit three goals and se— veral assists in the two games...We wonder if they can be persuaded to come back to the Mari- times for the playoffs. Our Saturday win may have been very expensive as goalkeeper Sangs Mc— Innis suffered a muscle tear in his left leg second game-we won 5—3 with ' you I BIG WEEKEND FOR PANTHER SPORTS 7— DON'T Mgss .IT 2'1: during the second period and will, it is reported, be lost to the team for at least three weeks. Gerald Butler stepped into the breach and pre— formed brilliantly in both games, maintaining a "Goals against" average that must be just about the best in the league. With Gerald in the nets we have no goaltending worries but Gerald..please stay healthy...be careful crossing streets and watch your diet. For the benefit of those who wish to prognosticate (Crystal balls are available at the Athletic Department upon 24 hdurs previous notice) we'll give you the ‘remaining%games and pres- ent standings of our closet contenders for the playoff spots. Moncton, in third place, have 17 points and have games with U.N.B. (2) UPEI (2) Mount A., Dal. and St. F.X. UPEI are in 4th place with 15 points, we'll take on the Mounties in three, Moncton in two and finish on the read with A gadia anjd S.M.U. Mount Allison has 10 points and have an almost impossible task, playihg UPEI (3) with singles against Moncton, U.N.B. and they also finish on the road against S.M.U. and Acadia. Of course all we have to do is win ALL our remaining games and we'll hosting the "B" round of the playoffs... now if our medics can work miracles..go to it RabbilllPray!!! With so much impor— tance for Mount A. in the two games here this week- end we can certainly look forward to two hard games at the Forum and we urge you to go out and root for the hometeam who, by the way, have a better record on the radflthan they have at the almost mournful, quiet and, at times, almost empty Fitzroy Street Ice Palace. With Friday night start— ing off with‘the Panther— ettes against the St. F.X. girls, to be followed by the BIG St. F. X. basket— ball game in the gym and then the two Mount A. hockey games on Saturday and Sunday this might be rated as the biggest sports week of the year. Much as we hate to be a bad in— fluence in trying to detract from your study time we must urge you to get out and root for your teams.. it healps you know... see also Page [0 -—-‘> SOme guys can go pelting down the Road of‘Life like an arrow.
