Tur congregation of Zion Church (Presby- terian) had a very pleasant gathering on Fri- day night. The Tea and Fancy Sale were well patronized by friends from all the other city churches, and the ladies of the “little church on the square’—now enlarged—feel gratified with the success of their labors, and grateful to their liberal-minde¢ patrons. They may well be. They worked zealously them- selves, Over $300, 'we hear, rewarded their efforts, and that sum these hard times, is not a bad “ catch of fishes.” The Tea was held in the ladies’ parlor, and the Fancy Sale in the e basement room, both of which were well crowded, May such reunions be always pleasant and—profitable. : Joun Cavanaan and Patrick Lamb were further examined at the Stipendiary Magis- trate’s Court, yesterday, for attempting to rob Weeks’ & Co's store. R. Dewan and Peter Toole were examined, but the Court failed to obtain from them anything of importance re- garding the matter. Michael McMahon swore that shortly after eight o’clock on the evening the attempt was made, Lamb came runnin through the lane in the rear of Hyndman’s building, and asked him if there were any policemen about. He said ‘‘ No,” and then asked Lomb what was the matter. The latter then told him that he broke into Week’s store, but that they were chased before they had time to get anything, and that they had to jump out through the window. oe then came along and said, ‘‘ Let us cut for the wharf.” They did so. McLure (Liberal) has been elected to the House of Commons in the County of Londonderry, defeating Mr. Alexander (Conservative) by 611 votes. CONSTANTINOPLE, Dec. 20. The Porte will deliver an answer to Prince Lobanoff, Russian Ambassador, con- cerning the delinative treaty, immediately. Lonpon, Dee. 20. The Standard’s Paris special says official confirmation is received that instructions have been sent to the Russian mission at Cabul to return. The Times’ Phillipopolis despatch states that Prince Dondoukoff Korsakoff has is- sued a circular, enjoining all employees to actively assist the International Commis- sioners in their financial labors to prevent all hostile manifestations ; and informs the population that the aim of the Commission- ers is only to make the country prosperous. The Commission has passed a vete of thanks to the Prince. Lonpon, Dec. 19. The Times’ finanoial article says there is good demand for money maintained at the Bank of England, seven per cent. having been charged for advances. It is quite pos- sible, in spite of the influx of gold, the Bank return will show a further reduction of reserve. Itis important, in present cir- cumstances, that too much should not be made of this circumstance, due almost en- tirely to unprecedented expansion of note circulation at the most inconvenient season of the year. At the present moment the Banks—in London more particularly—have very largely unemployed ‘balances, and through their disinclination to afford the usual accommodation, demand is thrown upon the Bank of England. Simultaneous- ly with this pressure, securities have been realized to a large extent, and proceeds sent into the provinces. It should be im- pressed upon those who do not absoiutely need money, that they only tend to aggra- vate the temporary stringency by hoarding unnecessary supplies. There is no commercial demand worth speaking of, and there can consequently be no cause whatever for the continuance of the existing tightness after the turn of the year, provided fresh financial difficulties do not arise to create further distress. Mr. Gladstone’s willingness to contest Edinburgshire for the Commons is condi- tioned on assurances to be given by Liberal committees that they can secure his return. The object is to win that important seat, Lord Dalketh, the present member, being a Conservative. A despatch from Oldham says a number of mills, principally those of limited com- panies, have commenced running part of their machinery at the reduction, but the ‘‘ minders” have, in very few cases, ap- peared to look after the mills. ‘‘Piercers,” engaged in many instances for the ‘‘ mind- ers’” work, have performed their work satisfactorily. It*is part of the scheme of the employers to break down the ‘‘ Mind- ers’ Union” by employing ‘‘ piecers ” to tend the mills, and thus dispense with the ‘‘minders” altogether. The strike has now entered upon its fourth week, and there have been lost in wages sixty thou- sand pounds, besides loss of capital. There is great distress among the laboring classes, and appeals are being made for their re- lief. ee .——————————enree The Steamship. WRITTEN IN THE YEAR 1835. I. Hark ! the signal cannon roars, The gallant ‘‘ Spitfire” strait unmoors, And leaves behind Old England’s shores, To plough the deep biue sea ; Her paddles whirl, her pennons glance, Her steady course is laid for France, And that fair land of song and dance This night her port shall be. The thronging crowd who tread her deck, Fast lessening to a moving speck, Tho’ Fortune with a different beck May call on each we see.
