'I‘i1e Provincial Rifle Matches were pnduded yesterday afternoon at 1.30 in a most sensational manner, )y six riflemen shooting ofl ties in , {he Ladies Challenge 'I‘1'ophy Match, The six were Sergeant G. G. Mc- Lcnnan, Captain W.A. Smith, Ser- geant P. Landrigan, Private E. Coles,‘ hergeant .1. Poole and Captain A.W. Allan. Each had made 49 points out of a possible 5O in this match in which 36 riflemen represented 36 ladies. Five shots were fired and lhese resulted in Sergeant Landrigan and Private E. Col-es scoring 24 points the others only scoring 23. Condi. tions required that they each shoot shot ior shot. The greatest excite- ment; prevailed on the Butt as they settled down ior the shoot-oil, first one would make a bull, then the oth- er, and as da-rlsflss was settling down it looked I though night would ar- rive before the issue would be decid- ed. However, on the fourth shot Ser- geant Landrigans bullet did not quite graze t bull, and the red marker indicating an inner appeared. would Coles hit the bull? All was expecta- hon and a. hush fell on the intensely interested spectators. Soles picked np his rifle very deliberately. A look 3f quiet determination could be seen )n his Iaoe as he settled down ior Ivhat he hoped to be the lest and de- yiding shot. He paused on instant, )hen pulled, and the white marker indicating that he had hit tlie bull's )ye appeared. A tremendous cheer broke iorth and the victor was warm- bv congratulated. 1n winning the )eauti.iul trophy for Mrs. Senator Prowse, Private E. Coles oi Milton, also became the winner o! the John Louson medal awarded [or this match. It will be re- membered that Thursday Private Coles came into the world's sporting limelight by his magnificent perform- ance in making three consecutive possibles, a feat that has rarely hap- pened at any rifle meet and one that Itamps him permanently in the hall bi fame. 1111s young man’ from Mil- ton looks as though he will go tar in rifle shooting. In yesterday morning's Guardian we refermd briefly to the Prowse _ Bros. Match, which was fired at 200, 300 and 600 yards. It was won by Sergeant P.J. Landrigan with the magnificent score oi 102 polniswhich Fquals the record ior this event made by Captain A.w. Allan two years ago. R.L. Coles finished with lhesame score. but Landrigan had the better score at the long range. Another excellent score in this match was that of Private Eric Coles, who istflbllshqd a century. The Prowso Tea-m Matoh was won by the P.E.I. Highlanders Team, with a totalscore or 205 points. The first match fired yesterday was the Silver Black Fox lirlatch, 10 rounds at 300 yards. 'I'hls resulted in l. win ior Naval Cadet A. Gormley. who scored a possible oi 50 points, a wondeiul shoot. He was closely fol- lowed by Captain A.W. Allen and Private A.O.F. Gill, each with 49 Points. The scoring ‘in this match was quite high as it was in all oth- ers. The Corporation Match was shot immediately after the Silver Black Fox Match. and resulted in a win for A.L. MacDonald of Summ-erside with a score oi 49 points. out of a possible 50- We may mention that Mr. Mac- Donald had on account oi the dii- ierence in ranges. made some errors in his first scores, but when he got on to the hang oi things he certainly {lid some wonderful shpoting. All were V"! Pleased indeed to see a western Feplesentative win this match and 3,19 Wis heartily congratulated. It is 00PM that next year more oi the Bummer-aid boys will come down and l neuter interest will be taken there 1n rifle shooting. The faithful band who have been following the game there ior years are all very popular 91090 whose presence at the Provin- Ilgl meetings is looked iorward to by I . Blizzard's. wnaaoiflg, MEN-T t i L ii "We °f 49 Points out oi a possible 50. It, will be remembered that Lieut, Andrew was the winner oi the Grand AEETEEBi-e last year. This year he has not been shooting so brilliantly. In this match there were many other 800d scores made considering the difficult conditions which exist/rd while it was being shot. The meeting concluded with the Ladies Challenge Trophy Match re. ierred to in the opening paragraph of this report. The 1114601118 Just concluded was one of the most spectacular and the most successful from a high class shooting standpoint, ever held here. True, there were not quite so many competitors as last year, but the brilliant shooting made up ior their lack. At the conclusion or the shooting. the President oi the Association, Lt.- Colonel 11M. Davison, V.D., present- ed the Davison Challenge Trophy to Sergeant Percy Landrigan. This tro- p“; is a magnificent one donated by Colonel Davison to the riflemen scor- ing the greatest number oi points in all the matches oi the meeting. He also presented Sergeant Landrigan with the Governor Generals Silver Medal, the Dominion oi Canada Ri- fle Association Silver Medal and the Louson Medal, these being awarded for various aggregates. Sergeant Landrigan was the outstanding rifie- man oi the meeting, finishing with a marvellous showing, in that in the entire two days he only lost 18 points, a record that has never been equall- ed in this province. There is no question that were he to devote him- self seriously to rifle shooting he The brilliant performance oi Pri- vate Eric Coles oi Milton has been referred to. We must also refer to the wonderiul showing oi Sergeant J. Poole, oi Montague, who, though handicapped by the fact that the rifle range 0i that village has_ Wnot been in order, yet finished second to Sergeant-Landrigan in the aggregat- es, thereby winning the Governor Generals Bronm Medal and the Dominion of Canada. Rifle Associat- ion Bronze Medal. Sergeant Poole has the appearance oi a typical high class rifle shot. He is cool and rol- lccted and holds the rifle with a grip oi steel. We hope he will be well eq- uipped ior Ottawa and that we may have the pleasure of seeing he and Sergeant Landrlgaii, our representat- ives on next year's Bisley. The Guardian wishes to express its appreciation of the courtesy of the Secretary Liz-Colonel C. Leigh, V.D., who handled the meeting most cap- ably. To the range ofllcer, Captain J .A. Webster, we are asked to give the thanks oi the riflemen ior his uniiorm courtesy and consideration and his genial manner exhibited to allfThe statistical department which was headed by Lieut. J.S. Moore, with Captain W. Worth and Mr. A. Francis as assistants, had the re- suits out very quickly indeed. The markers and the_ targets were splen- didly looked after under the capable direction of the range keeper, Ser- geant J. King. In conclusion we may say that 1929 will go down in rifle shooting history as a year that will be remembered ior a long time. THE PROWSE 81105., LTD. MATCH 200, 500, 600 yards. P. J‘.
