Very naturally, gentlemen, our attention and interest are centered on the Motherland and U19 “'01” 20110. for we believe the most gigantic Slrllgsle the world has even seen or ever will see, is going on at U10 Present time. Our ~ hearts are saddened at the fact of so many of the very best_of our Emgireis men being cut down in this terri le carnage. Just a word of tribute to those noble Bel- glans. who, so nobly and courageously fought for homo,and_c6unlry and free- dom. and wiio stayed in some measure the onward march, 'of-a~cruel tyrant whose every step was marked with the blood of the innocent. Already the fruits ofthe war are in evidence, for have not the people of Russia and France reason to rejoice thnt~ prohibition of the liquor traffic nr iiitoxicants has come in force in these countries-and the best think- ers in Britain are beginning to realize it would lie in her best interests to liv_ve the traffic in lnzoxiciints curtail- et. i_Aw ENFORCEMENT. The Prohibition Law enforcement, in our own province has been calling our attention of late. As I understand law enforcement. it is the duty of any Gov- ernment to see that every law on the Statutes is properly and rigidly en- forced. We must view the matter of law enforcement in a broader sense than it has and is being viewed by many, viz.. is this Government doing as well as that Government did, or vice versa. This is only the party spirit view, and if anything is to’ be gained along these lines, we must rise above party and stand as one man for what we believe to be right and just. DEPRESSION IN TRADE. The depression being felt at present the world over, is not so apparent hero owing to it being altogether an agri- cultural province. The fox industry is perhaps hit harder than any other in- dustry on thc Islaml. A quietness pre- vails at present. We believe when the war is over the industry will come back to a great dividend paying busi- ness. The abnormal profits produc- ed by the business created a specula- tive or get rich quick spirit among us, drawing away the attention of many from tlio farm. The depression at present we believe will correct this, ami bring iibout iiormnl cond;itions again. GIFT OF OATS. We congratulate ourselves on the gift of oats to the Army Field Service l~`und by the farmers of P. E, Island. I may say neither your secretary nor myself can give you any facts or fig- ures concerning the gift, as this, the only organization of the farmers. was not coiisulted in any wny on the nint- ter. .
