" WBIIICII BEAR " SENNETT COMEDY mor - Mr. Allen cited a road near Anti- e gonish, N. S. that would not com- pare with any Island roads. Dr. MacMillan: “How would it compare with the Allen Road?" - Mr. Alien said that the latter was now dry and smooth and was good - enough for anyone to travel over. Nova Scottu per capital tax he said, is 400 per crnt greater then ours, Why then should the Lea Govern- - ment be ' criticised for borrowing reasonable nmollnts for necessary expenditures in -p-ub1i'c works? If it was fair to collect a poll tax in Charlottetown, why is it not fair to collect it from the Province? Mr. Allen asked. If evcr there was an administration that, was determined to balance the province finance it was" tile Bell Government. Why should any person be allowed to vote. without contributing to the Provin- cial revenue? It would only be fair and proper to dlsfranchise anyper- son who did not pay poll tax, Mr. agricultural prices have declined. He cited figures showing increases in cost of manfactured articles since 1914. Premier Bennett should have protected the farmers as well as the manfactursr, which it was not doing Mr. Allen said. The fox industry is in such a con- dition today that every rancher must watch his expenses. There are approximately 30,00) registered foxes and 10,000 unregistered foxes. An increase of 63,000 pups are OXIWCIBd this year, consequently we will have 100,000 foxes this year. Valuing each at $50, this makes $5,000,000 which is a. large amount u) have represented in one industry. Mr. Allen dealt with the freight rate per pound on cheap fox moat which rate today is a high as on high-class beefsteak. This was an absorbent rate and makes it difficult for the fox farmer to operate at a profit. The financial report this year was not Mr. Allen's but it was one which the Public Accounts Commit- tee recommended last year. It gave, he said, the opportunity for any one to see at a glance the total revenue and expenditure of the Province. Exception had been taken to a num- ber of items In Capital Expenditure Accounts but he defied anyone tosoy that these items were not capital ex- penditure or that they were not nec- cessary expenditures. The Grand River Ferry under the Conservative regime was criticised town, is visiting in RJOIIO Bay East, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Keefe. ll I\r;'1l\‘/'¢' v w. 6G ROMAN ALSO COMEDY AND SERIAL operation at the earliest possible season. The speaker went over the items of bridges, road gravelllng, etc. If the Opposition can find any- thing in the Revenue and Expendi- ture columns that should not be there he would like to know what it svas. The Opposition was trying to find something on which to catch the Government, but; they had not found very much. He quoted from the reports of the Public Account Committee of 1925 and compared this statement with the Public Accounts of last year. Using the arguments of the Opposition leader in 1925 the interest today would be $84,262. making a difference of $9,610 in this Government's form. ' The enforcement of Prohibition Act had been criticised to some ex- tent but not to any great extent. Government Control had “had its day and ceased to be." Prohibition is the law and if the Government had a little more support from the Op position and less destructive criticism it would be better. "We have no convictions today be- cause we have no offenders," lVllr. Allen said. "The place is dry. They say there are a-few airplanes carry- ing booze but that is a matter of the Custom authorities. Dr. MacMillan: "Any convictions in Summerslde last year?" Mr. Allen: “Oh yes." Dr. MacMillim: “How many?" lvlr. Allen: "You should know?" Dr. MacMllllanz “I do know, I am asking you if you know." The Opposition, Mr. Allen con- tended, criticised the Govsrment for convictions, and criticised them if there were no convictions. Continuing he said" that recently in another Province a car load of liquor met a delegation going up to the Government asking for financial relief. This was the situation under Government Control. He cited con- vlctions for illegal selling of liquor in other Provinces. ‘ Dr. MacMillan: "Tell us about that woman in Summerslde." Mr. Allen: “You might know m0?” about it than I do." Dr. MacMillan: “You don't know much about Summerside, do you?‘ ML: Allen: "I am talking about! Governmentbontrol in other Prov- inces." ' . One thing" the Government was re- ceiving credit for, Mr. Alien con- tinued, was the organization of the provincial police. Concluding "he said that "before March 1st" the Government would appeal i0 the 0°11" try. The Liberal Administration stood for progress; the Opposition stood for stagnation. Burkeholder purchased the salts from the York Trading Co.
