HAS!-‘ADD’! GADETTE. . AUGUST 18; P J‘. . ‘- 2 A raoiv houses. We attended recently an informal meet- ing of I then‘. at the Auction Rooms of M. N..Crut\. Court street. Brooklyn. N ew York, uf which Mr. Buxeou, the inven- tor of a new plan of iron buildings, explained his system. He constructs the frame work ol' his buildings entirely of cast iron, in sec- tions, which are made to interlock by very close fitting and ingenious joints, secured by keys ‘,1’ ' method of building avoids the labour o ‘ rilling arul bolting. which has been a great inconvenience in iron buildings. It also nllo tho hpuss to be taken down in sections, ad‘ removed atvery little ex- pense. «FI‘e' co ‘the frame we on t e outside with plates ufirett, by a similar sys- tem of interlocking. without any bolts or otherfastenluge, the joints being packed with gutta~percha, so as to exclude water under drnulic pressure. To finish the dove’-tat ings of the joints, he has invented a machine that _‘can perform the work of forty men. The wallsar made hollow, and the enclosed space is. filed in with a non-con ducting composition of beach sand and other substances, so that, as Mr. Sexton observed, his house becomes, when finished, a perfect fire- roof safe. T e roolls and floors are made of cast iron frames, resembling heavy ' ow sas es, the interstices being occupied, as in the case of windows, with plates of glass, of any re- quired thickness and transparency. The glass used is not our common glass, but is in itself a new and valuable invention, be- ing called malleable glass, from its wonder- ful property of toughness allowing it to bend freely without breaking. It can be drawn out into threads of any fineness, and so strong nndflexible that they are said to be comutenei manufacture of piano and violin strin s from this material. Mr. Sexton ban ed round a piece of this lass string for inspection. It was as smal as the E. string of a violin, and could be bent around the linger, or tied in a knot appa- rently like a catgut. Plates of this glass being let into the frame _work of the floors, the whole is then covered over with a peculiar transparent cement o Mr. Sexton’s invention, which makes the whole floor look like one solid plate of glass. The cost of roofing with this material is seventy-live cents per square foot._ The walls Inside can be covered with plaster, or finished with iron or glass, at the option of the builder. All the interior or- namentation, such as mantel-pieces, panels, Sic. , may be of malleable glass. ' The advantages claimed for this style of building are, lirst, its great cltenpness, and the rapidity with which it allows of con- -struction. It effects a saving of one-third the cost, and three-fourths in labour, over every other method. Mr. Sexton stated that he could complete an ordinary dwelling house in forty days. Second, the variety of style and finish that con be obtained at small cost, by different combinations of the same pattern. The inventor remarked that in the construction of the whole Crystal Palace, but six different patterns were required. Third, the facility with which such a build- ing can be taken own and removed. Fourth, its security from damage by fire or lightb_ing—thus saving all the expenses of insurance. or incidental advantages are its dursbrity, freedom from vermin, &.c.—-New York Leader. The gentleman turned around and replied I belipve not, sir !" “ Oh, then, I suppose that isthe reason he mus’n’t have a seat!” The gentleman had three gold rings on his hand,-and his pew nearly empty.
