Gzowski,_the only Canadian A.D C. tothe Queen, a Russian by birth and eminent Civil Engineer, died today. ' Col. Sir Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1813. He was the son of a. Polish nobleman, and being destined for a military career was educated at the militaryengineering college at Krem- nitz. where he remained till 1830. In the Polish revolution of that time he joined his ' compatriots and took part in several battles. He was captured and afterwards exiled. He landed in New York in 1833. He there learned English, studied law and was iidiniiiei to ihii biir. Iii isii he came to Toronto and there entered upon a career as engineer. With the late Sir A T Galt, Sir D McPherson and L H Holton, he became contractor for constructing the Grand Trunk Railway between Toronto and Sarnia. They all made fortunes in that and other enter- leresl. in mi.itary`affairs in Canada, was ifor some years president of the D R As- ‘sociation and in 1879 was appointed A. D.'C. to the Queen. He was connected with many important engineering works, was knighted in 1890 and was Administrator of the government of Ontario in 1896.
