Financial/employment considerations Sincerely yours, a) Reduction in residence rates Lisa Murphy At this time the budget for the operations of the residences UPEI Student Union and food services is still being considered and no firm rec- President ommendations have been reached. This operation is, as I have noted above, ancillary to the University’s regular bud- get, and is supposed to break even. There is thus very little flexibility in setting out the charges for room occupance and meal rates. The possibility of a modest adjustment to those who remain in residence for both semesters is being exam- ined. Reduction of tuition fees No recommendation at this time is being considered that would involve an adjustment in tuition fees “to reflect disrup- tions /inconveniences experienced during the academic year”. We have been advised by the Maritime Provinces Higher Ed- ucation Commission that tuition fees should rise by the same amount as that recommended for the operation grant, that is, about 6.9%. Since our expenses will remain the same throughout the year in question, any loss in revenue means a deficit or a reduction in services. In my opinion the quality of the education that will be received next year will not, and should not, be compromised by this break; indeed, I think it possible for the long break to be a constructive feature; and I hope that the students will accept that these disrup- tions and inconveniences, real though they are, should be seen as their significant contribution to the holding of the Winter Games on PEI. I at any rate will acknowledge this Pall-bearers carrying the casket of post-secondary education at demon- indebiney; perhaps other wl fw su eee ane Reduction of admission rates for students at Winter Games functions/events The Host Society has set the prices for attendance at Winter Games events, $4.00 for Day passes, $5.00 for Medal passes, with admission to all venues. The Society believes that these prices are as low as can be set, and thus cannot offer any discount to special groups. Student loan considerations I will indeed inform the Provincial Government of the spe- cial circumstances that students will face in 1990/91, and 1 will ask that serious consideration be given to adjust the ALL AAP MMII LPP IRS TASH SSHR2OSSLEMADELSASEeLa LeeLee SE: a RRR eee —————————E———————e
