The question as to what calling pro- duces tho greatest acts of bravery on _thu part of men is one that periodically comes up to lie answered, and there is but little doubt that the firemen ofthe world have ance of their duty. This magnificent spirit of self sacrifice seems to be a characteristic of the men -you find it everywhere there is a fire company. and among all classes of men. Curlously enough in arinorial bearings tire is employed to denote those, who. being ambitious of honor, perform nrave actions with an ardent courage, their thoughts always aspiring as the fire tends upwiirfis. Some such sentiment seems to animate firemen, they are filled with a desire to mount higher, and verily it is easy to believe that if risks imolviug tiieir lives were to confront the firemen oi' Charlottetown in the performance of their duty, they would be found ready to go forward and be enrolled in the ranks of the world`s great heroes. All of which is-or perhaps is not, apropos of the Tournament which our firemen have planned for the entertain- furnlshed instances of bravery which surpass the achievements of heroes in any other class of life. There is little need to explain the awful risks they run in the, great conlingratlons of big cities, nor of the wonderful feats they perform in their lllefavlng work; nor is it ne.-es ary to toll oi the horrible, agonlsingdealhe they ‘ment of their visiting brother-llrelnen; 'for the pleasure of their fellow-citizens; land for the practice of those manly sports w hieh develop muscle and keep men lit for the struggle they may be at any time enlled upon to engage ln. The flgliting of the grlin destroyer, Fire, has been scientifically practiced from the engine throned in honor on the top of the arch near the City Hall, ls a very near relative of the drst machines employed by the Romans before the Christian era. The inventions of the Ro~ iiiana undoubtedly were the fore- ruiiiiers of the iiioilern linini engine, which about the iiiidilln of lhe last century was iiuppliiiitwl by the sta-nn. tire engine, of which the Iiollo and Silsby formerly in use Charlottetown were fair types. It was not until the year islll, that a properly or|ran'Izad Fire Ilriaaiie was asliilillslieil in Ulini‘loiieto\vii. l’i'evio\i~ly to that the fire fighting was iioaie by "bucket brigades" and by two hiiiid engines one oi' wliiizli was imported from England by Lieutenant Governor Siiiilh In the yi-nr lrilii, and the other was the properly of the i~o|~|iers and wliieli was brought to the Island some long time before 1541!. Of course in those early days the ilrva were noi. aut-li serious uiattera as they ly-caiiie after ()iiiir|ntteto\ri\ hi-gan ii .c oliiilns of people with buckets passed Irniii lianil lo liaiifl to li.: oiiiptied into the nox ofthe hand engine and then forced on to the liarnes by the men at the brakes, iiianaged in pretty well ronirol ihc ravages of the fire ileml. The earliest arrivals at the station. houses would iun out the engines anfl start forthe fire. lnitigiii however, aithas been stated a systematic attempt at organization was made, with the following engines and inenz- ll Hand Engine No. 1.-calico the Prince Edward. This is the engine which is now to be seen on top of the arch in front of the City Hall. Charlottetown became an incorporated city in the year 18.35 and the above men- tioned engines were shortly afterwards all handed over to the City and by the City to have to die when they, as often happens, | 1 h me erf°,.m_ivery eailieet time; and the old hand the Fire Department. give up theirllves n t o no p ,-f°1¢1- il$%U§DmmW2M§%Q§£QUUHm3)3$31®§§ ®@mii i 'HI-' ..;.-..;. .».,-.-.. -»n.»' _ \ ,Conn Manner riouss: nuargirto. \ . , ____._____ _ _ _ _ _ __ __ ,;._._¢,.,-- - . . . . . . ... ..... , ...-. -..----.ti--~.,~»,-~ ,.. no .. rj-54;. u I ..
