by Yvonne MacKean Da Bears On December 30, the University of Alberta Golden Bears visited the Panthers for an exhibition hockey game. The Panthers were using the game as a tune up for the second half of the season. Unfortunately, the Bears were stiff competition. Led by Tiltgen, Jickling and Degney, the Bears defeated the Panthers 3-1. The Panthers’ lone goal was scored by Colin Wilson, assisted by Greg Power and Clarke Trolley. Mitchell, in spite of the loss, had a strong game in nets.. Battle of the Cats The Panthers’ first test in the new year was on Jan 6 against the visiting Dalhousie Tigers. The hockey game started off quickly and both teams had opportunities, but the Panthers got on the board first with a power play goal by Forbes MacPherson, assisted by Sproul and Cory Power. The Tigers tied up the game before the end of the first on a goal by MacIntyre. The Tigers outshot the Panthers 14-11 in this period. In the second period, the Panthers broke the game wide open. The Pan- thers second goal was scored by Mike Harding, assisted by Greg Power. The third goal was scored by John Nelson, assisted by Sproul and Wilson. Before the end of the period the Panthers added a fourth goal from Todd Walker on a nice pass by MacPherson. The Panthers outshot the Tigers 15-13. The Panther Prints January 16, 1996 The third period saw the Panthers defend and add to their lead. The fifth goal was scored by the great individual effort of captain KJ White, assisted by Nelson and Wilson. In the end, the Panthers were victorious with a 5-1 result. Congratulations goes to player of the game, goalie David Mitchell, who had a great game in nets, stopping 36 Tiger shots. The Axe falls Sunday the seventh found the Panthers facing off against the Acadia _Axemen. The first period progressed slowly, as a result of many penalties and stoppages of play. Scoring, on the power play, for the Panthers was Jason Sproul, assisted by Nelson. Acadia’s first goal was scored by Weaver. The Panthers lost Lavoie to a game miscon- duct and Ertel due to an injury. Each team had eleven shots on goal. The second period saw Acadia go ahead 2-1 on a goal by Fraser. The Axemen outshot the Panthers 15-13. The third period saw the Axemen pad their lead in the latter minutes of the period with three unanswered goals, including an empty net goal. The Panthers had opportunities but were stoned by Acadia goalie Amundrud. His efforts earned him player of the game award. The attendance at the game was 640, so hopefully future contests will bring out more fans. Remember stu- dents, with your UPEI ID card, you get in free. The Panthers’ next opponents are St. Thomas. Nicer Side of the 'Net By Jonathan Davis It was recently announced that the commercial computer network CompuServe has stopped carrying any Internet newsgroups with sexual content. CompuServe is based in the USA, but services many nations worldwide, and is the second largest commercial on-line entity. Their decision to cease offering sexually oriented newsgroups has been surrounded by lots of angry people, and very few brain cells. So how did this happen? That is easy. The German government demanded that CompuServe cease carrying sexually explicit newsgroups in Germany, or face prosecution. CompuServe, not wanting either a lawsuit or to be banned from their German operation, removed the offending newsgroups. However, the design of the CompuServe network is such that they cannot restrict the sexually oriented newsgroups from just Germany. It is either everybody, or nobody. The CompuServe executives decided it would be better business to go with nobody. What is going away? Really, nota whole lot. Once upon a time, the sex- related newsgroups were relatively mature and restrained. If you had a question about the effectiveness of a type of birth control, you could ask it and get a serious, mature answer. Now, however, with such mass Internet access by people who don’t really know what they are doing, have commer- cial interests, or just aren’t responsible has destroyed the mature handling of sex. If a woman were to ask in the alt.sex newsgroup now how effective a certain form of contraception is, she is likely to get more people offering to help her try out the various methods than serious answers. The educational value of the discussion groups is very low indeed. The other half of what CompuServe has dropped from their newsfeed are the pornographic binaries groups. These are newsgroups that are solely for the distribution of computer pictures ranging from the Sears underwear section to stuff that would make Hugh Hefner cringe. On the alt.sex newsgroup, response has been pretty loud. And pointless. Shouting that CompuServe is run by a neo- Nazi sadistic prudish executive is not going to accomplish anything. The spearhead of the anger is the idea that CompuServe is supporting censorship and breaking one of the US’s beloved amendments (first, is it?). Well, for one, I doubt that the German politicians really care a whole lot about the USA’s first amendment. And, for the other, it isn’t censorship. CompuServe isn’t censoring the newsgroups because they aren’t preventing its users from seeing them. What CompuServe is doing is just refusing to be the source. If the sex on the Internet is really that important to people, they could just stop using CompuServe and use another Internet access company and continue to get all the sex newsgroups they want. Personally, I’m glad that CompuServe has cut out access to the sex newsgroups. Remember the aforemen- tioned noise on the alt.sex newsgroups that prevent mature conversation? A decidedly disproportionate amount of that comes from America On-Line, CompuServe, and Prodigy. All of these ‘‘easy Internet access’’ companies do not have a natural barrier against stupid and immature people. With CompuServe gone from this area, perhaps we are on the road to having a Nicer Net.
