seventy hours continuously,can produce

are placed singly between cardboaids,

where they are rendered smooth and

downwards, upon an endless revolving
band, one by the side of the other, and
drawn between two cyliuders,the upper
one (which is kept heated) spreading
the gum on their backs. After having
passed through a drying chamber,iilted
with electric ventilators, they are again
collected, and once more require to be
put into the hydraulic press. All that
remains to be done after this is to pass
them through a perforating machme,and
over a knife which cuts _them inzo quar-
ter-sheets of 100 stamps each. Finally.
these are packed into bundles of 100,
ready tuba despatched to any post-oilic
inthe United States. On the average
they send 0E 400.000 of those neat little
parcels annually.
If the reader has been rather bewild
ered by the huge iivures we have just
been dl aling with it will be a relief as
well as a surprise for him ‘o hear tha
the cost of producing a large sheet ot
400 stamps is barely more than one
cent, or one halfpenny ot our coinage.
