Notwith- standing the cold, stormy weather there was a good attendance. Captain Maxwell, R. N., occupied the chair. Rev. A. Osborne read a aperon ‘The Church as evidenced by the See Testament.” A discussion followed in which the Rev. D. Fitzgerald, Charles Palmer, Dr. Leeming, the archdeacon and Thomas Williams took part. The Rev. Mr. Oshorne closed the debate. Fine.--At three o’elock this (Wednesday) morning a fire originated from some unknown cause in the residence of Mr. James Connolly, cooper, Dorchester street (West). It was not discovered by Mr. Connolly until it had full possession of the apartment in which it broke out, and he and his family were obliged to make their eacape from the premisés through a window. The house was totally destroyed. A heavy gale was blowing from the north- west, and as the fire broke through the roof, it threatened destruction to the surrounding houses. The ‘‘Silsby”’ engine arrived in good time and took position at she tank en the cor- ner of Queen and King street. A steady stream was poured by her, and the fire was thus’confined to the burning premises. The houses on the east and west side of the one destroyed, belonging to Bernard McPhillips and Mr. Connolly, respectively, were slightly burned. Mr. Connolly's loss is upwards of $600. Insurance, $162. Ow Fripay last, Major Morris’ Battery of Garrison Artillery competed for prizes given by the Dominion Artillery Association to bat- teries armed with small-bore guns. The tar- get, which consisted of an ordinary hogshead, was placed on tae ice at a distance of 1,200 yards from the battery. The practice made was excellent-—a large proportion of the shots striking the ice within a radius of 5 yards from the target solid shot was made by Sergt. Younker, who is one of the crack marksmen of the Battery, he being already in possession of a silver decoration of cross-guns and two badges, won at former competitions, and would have on this occasion - carried off the first rize, but for one of his shots falling short. he successful competitors are :— lst prize, Silver Cross-Guns and gilt em- broidered Badge —-Corporai Love, 36 points. 2nd prize, gold embroidered Badge— Lieut. Heuson. 3rd prize, do, do, do, Gunner Steele. A vielent collision between the farmers and constabulary occurred on Saturday at Knock Rackard, in the northern part of County Mayo, Ireland.
