Not i the Bible Society. who, having ’ taken up the task have never since fumed back. it‘ Mr. Raymond indicated the 1,’. ‘published in 593 different languages Every twenty-six days saw the birth of a new edition in yet another tongue. From the present British and Foreign Bible Society had sprung the Swedish, German and American Bible Societies, and the other na-~ tional societies. Each of these, in its inception was given one thous- and pounds by the parent organiza- tion to start working with. Now, in over 800 of the world's languages God's word can be read. Mr. Raymond then spoke of the great difficulties which arose in the accomplishing of this work. Often an alphabet suited to the sounds of a language had to be prepared. Fol- lowing this, a dictionary would be got ready. Then the Bible itself is compiled. and it is ‘revised and revised again to free it as far as possible from errors in translation. This work having been completed, the Bible Society is communicated with. They print and prepare the Bibles at one of their printing houses, ship them free of cost to the place where they are to be dis- tributed and there sell them at a. pricc commensurate with the means- of the people-though always far below cost. So it has come to pass that many ‘of the world's languages which nev- or before had been written down. have been printed in the Bible, that the word of God might be given to the people, And this is the work that the Bible Society is seeking to do in its printing houses established at various strategic points all over the world. The speaker then gave figures showing how the circulation, which just before the war had been eight million copies per year had, in 1915, jumped to ten million copies, and. in 1916, due largely to distribution of Bibles to the soldiers reached its peak of eleven million copies. By 1925, it had receded to ten million copies, but this circulation has since been exceeded, and is stll increas- ing, so that last year we over ten million copies were distributed. Of these, one million went to Europe, and over four million to China-a remarkable thing, when one takes into account the distraught condi- tion of that country, torn as it is lby war and frictional strife. Canada's’ share in this distribu- tion was 412,000 copies. As each im- migrant arrives in Canada. he is supplied with a copy free. It is in is own mother tongue; but on each page there ls a parallel version in English. They thus form valuable aides in familiarizing the ziewcomq ers with the language of our coun- y. “The practical thing" went on the speaker, “is to suggest to you how 150-21’ ‘E-‘simumoq. -,_bremr , ployment for Sui‘- ' eok F MA ' Jolin A; McCall-ville, Kliikom- <.l'.-E°-i' 1677-16-71 ‘i pflMdllo Help Wants? in “N; b'.f,ltiacl.t‘llfl' i" Undertaker v n I u I pertlnaweeit.‘ lel-Br- I ber College, Department "F" Holl- fax. _ o-i-zz-ttetr oaveowovocvybovooeonoe cKinnon Drug Co. < T»? » QEEAEESTER Egg’; s?
