Not a hard Mester did I deem my Lord, But jus!, since he had pledged his royal word, And written in high, “ The soul that sinneth, it shall surely die, the changeless ro'ls on ? So when, in dreams, I beard the solemn call Summon my spirit to the judgment-hall, Trembling, leried: “In this my utmost nee:l Still with his justice let his mercy plead.” L», to the door, with greeting hands, there came One with a welcome, in my Lord's dear nme, Grasping her garment’s hem, 1 poured my plea ; “ O! tender mercy! Let me come with thee |!’ “ Justice must smite”; bat, with a radiant look, She showed the pages of the jadgment- book ; ‘I am hie jastice ; hast thou never heard Just to forgive is written in his Word?” — Emily Huntingoten Miller. Joan of Arc Not Burned. History seems to be about to lose another ofits favorite stories in the case of Joanof Arc, as documentary evidence of the strongest kind goes to show that the old story of the burning of the maid of Orleans is a fable. There is proof that Joan lived in the town of Metz, fon the 20th of May,1436. She was then recognized by her brother. There is a record in the archives of Metz de- clearing her marriage to one Robert dez Armoises, knight, and mentionivg the birth of two sons. After Joan was married she wasknown as Dame Joan, and whenever she came to Orieans she was eumptuously entertained meat and wine at tho expenseof the town. There is a record which materi- aliy assists this proof and shows that the towa of Orleans paid her 210 livres 28 a recompence for services rendered during the siege. it was always difficult to believe that a king who owed his crown to a mere girl could suffer her to be burnt alive without raising his voice. It was necessary that the English soldiers, who believed her tobe a sorceress, should think she was burnt, but Charles VII. knew it was a farce, and could, therefore, afford to remain passive. If the statement that she was not burned cannot be declared authori- tatively, it atleast may be suffieiently sustained to clear considerably the atmosphere about Rouen. ——————— 2 Milk for Coffee. That there isan appreciablo differ. ences between raw and boiled milk may be proved by taking equal quantities of each (the boiled samples having beea allowed to cool down), adding them to equal quantities of the same infusion of coffee, then critically testing the mixtures. The difference is sufficient to have long since established the prac- tice among all skillful cooks of scru- pulousty using boiled milk for making coffee. Lhave tried a similar experi- ment on tea, aod find that in this case cold milk is preferable. Why this should be, why boiled milk shonld be better for coffee and cold milk for tea, IT cannot tel!. lfany of my readers have uot done so already, let them try similar experiments with condensed milk, and I have no doubt that the ver- dict of the majority will be that it is passable in coffee, but very objectionu- able in tea, This is milk that has been very much cooked. The chief definable alteration effected by the boiling of milkisthe coagulation of the small quantity of albamen which it contains, This rises as it becomes solidified, which forms ascum on the surface, which may be lifted by a spoon and eaten, as it is perfectly wholesome and very butritious, tice on, nes A Sure Cure. “My buasband is so poetic,” said one lady to another in a Seventh street car the other day. “Have you ever tricd rubbin’ his jints with hartshern lini- ment, mum!” interupted a beet'y-look- ing woman with a market basket at ber feet, who was sitting at her elbow and overheard the remark. “That'll straighten him out as quick as any- thing 1 know of, if he aia’t got it too bad,” — Washingion Republic. Red Skies. A writer in the Scientific American of Dec. 19th, tekes the ground that the “red skies” of 1883, 1884 and occasion. ally at this time are not caused by “cosmical” dust or voleanie aahes, but by regular changes ia atmospheric con- ditions producing a delicately suspended vapor through the setting suao’s light gives the beautiful and wide-spread *‘ved” tint to all the sky. -_ Should Keep a Hired Man. Since then Mr. Lenanp has recommended AYER’S SARSAPARILLA in many similar eases, and he has never yet heard of its fail- ure to effect a radical cure, Some years agoone of Mr. cELAND’s farm laborers bruised his leg. Owing to the bad State of his blood, an ugly scrofulous swelling or lump appeared on the injured limb. Lor- 4% rible itching of the skin, with burning and emigration to Cal- darting pains through the lump, made life almost intolerable. The leg became onor- mously enlarged, and rumning ulcers formed, discharging great quantities of extremely offensive matter. No treatment was of any avail until the man, by Mr. LELAND’S direc- tion, was supplied with AYER’s SARSAPA- RILLA, which allayed the pain and irritation, healed the sores, removed the swelling, and completely restored the limb to use. Mr, LeLanpv has personally used Ayer's Sarsaparilla for Rheumatism, with entire success ; and, after careful observation, declares that, in his belief, there is no medicine in the world equal to it for the cure of Liver Disorders, Gout, the effects of high living, Sait Rheum, Sores, Eruptions, and all the various forms of blood diseases. We have Mr. LELAND’s permission to invite all who may desire further evidence in regard to the extraordinary curative powers of AYER’S SARSAPARILLA to see him person- ally either at his mammoth Ocean Hotel, Long Branch, or at the popular Leland Hotel, Broadway, 27th and 28th Streets, New York. Mr. LELAND’S extensive knowledge of the good done by this unequalled eradicator of blood poisons enables him to give inquirers much valuable information. PREPARED BY Dr. J.C.
