On the upper slopes of the High Mountains it was haying time. and there was no busier person any- where than Little Chief H-are the Pika. He was having. Like all haymakers when making hay Little Chief kept an anxious eye on the 'sky.. Hay cannot be made in wet weather, but hay already made can be spoiled in wet weather if it gets wet and then is not thoroughly dried again. No one knows this better than does Little Chief. He had been working hard this morning, cutting grass and other plants growing with the grass. These were just big enough and just right to make the sweetest kind o! hay, and Little Chief was working his hardest to get as much as he could while it was at its best. It would be ivonderfui eating in the winter when no fresh green food could be lcund. His tiny hayiields were outside the great rock slide in which was his home. He would cut the grass. make it into small bundles, and in his mouth carry these to be spread out on the roclu to dry. It meant a lot oi running back and forth between the tiny hayiields outside the great slide of rock and the haystacks he was making in shel- tered places among the rocks o! 'the great slide. Then the raindrops iell too iast to count. “It Ls raining.” said Little Kid. just as if he were telling hi-s friend something he didn't already know. Then he locked around for his mother, Nanny Sureioot. She was just lying down under the over- hang 0t u big rock where the rain couldn't touch her. He scampcred over there and lay down beside her. They were dry and comfort- able. They didn't Care how hard it rained. . But the little haymaker did. He scampered over the rocks to the nearest rock on which he had spread grass t.o dry.
