Dodds generous intentions and give them effect. They intend to ask for subscriptions to enlarge the sum at their disposal for library purposes before investing the sum they already have in books. The Y. M. C. A rooms will afford fairly suitable shelter for a public library. The location is central and _convenient of access. The custody and management ofthe library will be safe with the Association, but if needs be one or more representatives of the subscribers to the library fund might be associated in a sort of joint com- mission with the officers of the .Asso- ciation. Some definite scheme ought to be formulated that will give satis- factory assurance to subscribers that the money they donate viill be judiciously invested in books and that the library when formed will be prud. Ientl y cared for and readily accessible daily or on stated days or evenings of the week. With this done we are satisfied that many will not only be found willing, but eager to assist in proportion to their ability. There ought to be some generous contributions to this worthy object from our wealihier and more public spirited citiz ans, and such we tg-ug; may be obtained, but it is also _ desir- able that as many as possible of the entire citizenship should be induced to subscribe. The more money the better library we shall have and the more subscribers there are the larger will be the number who lakca genuine interest in the success of the enterprise. There is truth in the saying that where a mans' treasure is his heart will be,whether in religion or business. There is not the slightest danger of too much money being obtained, for tlie simple reason that tlietreasures of literature are unbounded and ten thousand dollars, were that sum avail- able, could be as readily invested in _ valuable books as could one thousand. A nd the investment in a public lib- rary will be found to be a good and pn fitable one in the hightest sense of the word. 'Every city, town or village that has made the' experiment has found it so, and every populous ,centre that has neglected the forma, " lion of a library has suiiered serious k loss. In these days nothing can atoue for that luck of general information and culture which is supplied by read- lllg. ‘ As u. means of raising the required ,subscriptions it has been suggested lrhat the Association should apporrion the work of soliciting' moneys to, say, ;'a<}~:£_i'¥‘32__;_:f£é:-slices prefered. apply tc ihisy li-Ph Ofllis m0St active Mid ular ’ro_i;i4;_r.-rbi: Ifginfn-ratio b-iekaweiiiag house. sitn.i1..> on ‘-‘- liter -trei-r, n -w in nose... ‘i;;:>;iurr;l()&;~.:j.»_-_ P-ecbonalil. lP0@3¢;ii..n givw . ~ oeo’cm`o>.r_ Bras and Co. »\ng?o'.l\. irl0=. end?
