The society gives insurance to its mem-
liers in policies of $5(ll. $1000. $1500 Of
$3110, the latter sum being the limit on
any life. The premiums. payable monthly

18%!! was 4.56. and since the organization
of the society in 1879, the average death
rate has been only 4,94.
The Sick and Funeral Benefit Branch is _
a very popular department, and upwards
of 18,000 of the members of the society are
participating in this feature of the order.
The benefits are $3 per week fer the first
two weeks of illness, and $5 per week for
the following ten Weeks, altogether $56
during any one year, besides a funeral

A CONSUMPTIVES’ SANA'l'0RlU.'ll. I
Consumption is so widely prevalent in_
all civilized countries that it is commonly
spoken of as “the white plague.” There
is not a Province of-the.Do_minion in which
this nialady is not-accountable for a large
share of the annual mortality, and in our
own salubrioustlsland its ravages have
been so great that we feel sure our read-
ers will take an interest in the measures
elsewhere taken for the treatment and
cure of consumptive patients.
Once it became an accepted factfas it
now is, t-hat this malady is an infectious
one, and that in its earlier stages at least
many cases are curable under favorable
conditions -and skilful treatment, the
sanatoriuni plan was adopted in several
countries, largely through private benefi-
cence. There are a number of these
United States and one or more in Canada.
A recent issue of the Toronto Globe gives
some interesting particulars of the in- number of inferior and poorly equhpgd
stitutioi. located in Muskoka, Ontario.

chances of cure.
Preventive measures must always re-
main of first importance in the conser-
vation of the public health, and especially'
in regard to tuberculous diseases.This point
has been heretofore strongly accentuated
in these columns. It is if vital consequence
that our children shall not consume the
milk of tubcrculous cows, or they or their
parents consume/tubereulous m`eat. But
the seeds of disease have been sown so far
and wide and the number infected is s0
great that the sanitorium has become a
pressing need of the times, alike as a
means of cure_ for the curable, and of pre-
venting the infection of thoscin health
from those who see already suffering.

SIR,-The letter of your correspondent
Mr. Horace Haszard ought to meet with
the approval of every friend of this Prov-
ince. To one not biased by partvism it is
evident that some effort must be made by
the good men in both parties to improve
the condition of ourpublic alfairs. A re-
duction in the number of therepresentives
of the people in the Legislature is urgent-
lyneedei. 'We donut rsquire30 men to
meet once each year for the purpose of
legislating on local matters. Fifteen, or
five from each County would be suilicient.
The civil service requires to_ be rear-
ranged, the Land Office, Registry Omce
and Public Works department amalgam-
ated into one and presided over b an'
oflicial who should not ‘only be ansywezv
able to the .people but also required to
give bonds for the faithful performance of
his duties. His clerks or employes shotl l
be by no means the appointees of any one
Government, but hired by the presiding
officer and entirely und er his control. In
this way a great saving could be effected
and the civil service not impaired but
improved. _

seems to be in an excessive number of
