don season continued to be blessed
with the weather conditions which
prevailed for the great opening ev-
cnt today, the private view of the
royal academy exhibition,-it will
lic one of the most brilliant in
many years. Continuous but unop-
prcssive sunshine greeted the event.
The crush of motor cars going to
the Royal Acadamy's headquarters
nt' Bu`rlii"l'gton House 'was so great
that traffic in-`l-‘iccridilly was held
lip repeatedly. This. however, mere-
ly gave the crowds on the sidewalks
li better opportunity of identifying
the more prominent of tho social
leaders.
Among the works~in the galleries
by far the most arresting were the
six mystical pictures by_ Charles
Sim, who met a tragic death in
Scotland a few weeks ago. Filled
with uncanny figures and sombre
colors, they seemed as if intended
lo express the anguish of the soul
of their creator. The 'crowd around
tllcm were today constrained to
speak in whispers and then to
move silently on. ` r
Very different in every way was
the effect of “The brothers" by 14
year old Joan Manning Saunders
who was present herself and re-
ceived the hearty congratulations of
some of the greatest painters in the
land, with charming simplicity.
