The men of modern times are deliberately shirking this duty for the peformance of which they were created.—-leaving large portions of the earth's surface an unreclaimed wilderness, and herding together in the great towns in order that they may “‘live easy” and “‘have a good time.” The result is that competi- tion, one with another, becomes keener and keener, the strong are compelled to oppress the weak in order taat they may exist, and the weak are forced to the slums to suffer, to ereate the difficulty of which Dr. Mce- Glynn complains, to hive and die miser- If, of rushing to the towns, men and women would, as com- manded, go out to subdue the carth, the ‘labor difficulty" would not be known, and there would be no problem to solve. Apt illustrations, proving the correctness of this conclusion, may be found in this In this “Isle of the Blest is comparatively little Because a large proportion of our ) away—some to the big towas to ably, instead 1 Province, there Why? youth poverty. sn compete with and to overcome their weaker brethren, and some to the Great West to subdue that part of the heritage which the Creator. at the beginning, gave to man. Therefore the populations of our towns are better proportion to that of than larger and advanced in the country in more communities ; and consequently—except as a direct re- sult of idleness or extravagance, or dissi- pation, or bad management—we have little poverty and not much difficulty in respect to labor. That the tendency towards the tuwns is greater, even here, than it ought to be, is, however, evident toany careful observer. Tais country, throughout, is not yet fully subdued and it might, by labor, be made produce three times as much as it does; but in the towns every position is filled, and competition is strong in nearly every department :f business. Even here we feel tu some extent the bad results which follow the shirkiag of the duty which the Creator has imposed upon man to subdue the earth. If this duty were fulfilled, therewould be more producers in the country, and there might be more persons in the towns, —andall would live more easily and be enabled to cultivate more thanthey do the pleasures of musie, art, science, religion,~and so“develup to a greater extent than they do their higher natures. There is ample room in the world tor every child of man, There are steamships and railways means of communication tu almost every part ot the world. The duty of subduing the earth can now be performed more easily than in any former period of the world’s history. Until that duty is done we never shall have the reign of peace—never be without our labor difficul- ties. Let the crowded and crushed denizens of London, New York, Boston, ete. » be in- duced to come out and take part in the performance of this duty. After they have subdued ali those parts of the earth which have not yet come under the power of the land-grabber, they will be in a position to deal with the monopolisis, if mono should then exist, There wes a great deal of food for thought in Dr, MeGlynn’s discourse. His pe lists was fair The fish are reported plentifn)] at Tignish, P. E. 1., and some at Campbel- ton. Two boys have just been dismissed from the high school at Dessau, Germany, for preaching socialism among their fellow- scholars. Another boy was sent away from the school sume time ago for a similar of- fence. It was learned iu that case that the boy had been incited by certain socialists to influence his companions in favor of the forbidden doctrines, and the necessity of further dismissals would seem to indica‘e that the seed thus sown has borne fruit. The Committee on Privileges of the House of Lords heard evidence on Fri- day in the claim made by Randal Mow- bray Thomas Berkeley, commonly known as Viscount Dursley, to the earldom of Berkeley, in opposition to Baron Fitz- Hardinge, Francia William Fitz-Hardinge Berkeley. Counsel on behalf of Baron Fitz-Hardinge said the fifth Earl of Berke- ley tried to seduce a servant girl named Mary Coie, and that failing in this attempt he seoretly married her and then conspired with the chaplain who performed the cere- mony to destroy the proof of the marriage. The claim depends upon whether the fifth Earl of Berkeley did or did not Mary Cole previous to the birth of her oldest son.
