A fire broke out at midnight in the east- ern end of the Previncial Poor Asylum, Deak Sik,+The attack ou the respected ‘an iummenss twelve story brick stracture in candidate for this Coupeil District, Mr. the south eastern suburbs of the city, con- Nicholson, which appears in the last issue | taining abyut 400 peop'e, and at 1] 30a. m., | of that disrespectful and disrespected sheet the Patriot, is but in keeping with the tenor of its profuse and wishy-washy productions Mr. Nicholson’s honesty, manliness and ebristian qualities present too stubborn a front for even Henry Lawson to oppose; ‘and he is compelled to confine himself to ltwo thrusts, viz :“inability and servility. As regards the first, reference can be made to Mr. Nicholson’s representation of his ‘district for the past four years. His re- jmarks in the House were always character- ‘ized by common senes and pointedness, and his sound ‘Opinions ‘avd gentlemanly de- jmieavor in debate, elicited respeet from jwenmtbers on both ‘sides of the House. Unprejotiiced parties . all agree that the Belfast Distriet was never better représented than during the past. four ‘years, and ‘“fwhen the opportwnity poffered,” the true electors of the Fourth | Liscrict showed their appreciation of Mr. Nicholson's ability, by returning him again to represent them; but the Grit mortgagees and: fagot voters of Charlottetown & was |who, by counteracting the will of the peo ‘ple, ‘* relueved bim of his public duties and sent him back .to private life.’” Those who attend the meetings at the present cam- _paign, and listen to the addresses delivered by the candidates, can easily perceive Mr, ‘Nicholson’s superiority over Mr. Muun, jwho “is @ man. of more than average ‘atil ty, and who, has ss good a kuowledge of the needs of the couhty as any man tuar ‘can be found in it.” As regards servility, I find, on referring to the Journal of the House for 1880, that Mr: Nicholson stood, iu division, opposed to-his leader on four ‘or five important occasions, whilst differing fréquently on lees impertant pots; and if \he followed him on all other occasions, it was not because he had. “‘ no will or mind lof his own,” but because he knew that his leader was legislating according to the people s wishes; and, speaking, of servile; fullowers, where cau one moreservils be found teoan Mr. Mann, whom Mr. Lawsou takes vecasion to isud to the skies ? | Mr. Lawson designates his article “‘A \Mistake,” and well he may—a fact which} rngo " iu} he wili more fuliy realize when the 1 grut electors of the Disirict resent /se tb otiered. fa $ phatie way. | .4f Yours respectfully, . ... , BEuFaster. ; Noy. 7, 1882. One of the most appalling murders ever perpetrated in the Ottawa district occurred lon Thursday last, but the news of the heartrending affair did not reach the city {until the 7th. It appears that on the day 'quentioned a cripple named Rohertson, seu of a Vaekleek Hil m:rebaat, left his home ou ahunting expedition. Not, returning, , the some evening a party of friends organ- ized and went in search of him. His uwther accompanied them, but no success was achieved until Saturday, when his wother discovered the unfortunate man in Lis .own room. His skull was fractured, levideut'y by some blunt instrument, and his fae and body also bore marke of harsh ‘treatment. It is thought that after being ‘pummeiled he was left te die in the woods by the villain who aitacked him, but sub- ‘sequently recovered sufficient strength to ciawi home. The Crown Attorney has the matter in hand, and a detective is now at work on the case. —~.>-o— A paper on ‘‘The Teacher Out of School,” read by Mr. Byington, Principal of tne Manitoba Normal School, at a recent teach- ers’ association, contained a number of good suggestions. The following are worthy for record :—The teacher sheuid display the qualities of a gentleman in every act and word, whether on or off the schoo] premises, He should occasionally take part in the ont door spor's of the children, thus mani- festing an interest in their games. He shouid chat occas.onally with them on the suojects of the greatest interest to them and about which they know most, such aa their dogs, kites, horses, chickens, trades, farwivg, &c. He might sometimes with advantage arrange for short excursions with special classes on Saturdays. He may sometimes profitably comdact a “ Current Events Class,” with the newspaper for text- book. He should visit his consutuents, the clnidren’s parents, rich and poor. He (or HALIFAX, N, 8. | Sue) should leave no part of the full man, phy-icaily, mental or mural, undeveloped to ARTICULAR ATTENTION given to the | its fullsst ex'ent, and should on all occasions Slipment ot Lobsters and other Canned} school and and out, practice the wotto, half of the building was a mass of fismes. The fire originated in the bakery were th-re were twenty cords of wood stored, and the flawes catching this then spread with light- ving rapidity and seon had that part of the bniding used as the hospitalin iss clutches. The inmates rushed about the building in great confusion, seemingly oat of their senses, and the work of getting them out was very difficult. It is thought that most of those coufined in the hospital have been saved, butit is feared that a number of lives are lost. The whole city fire brigade is pow at the seene of the conflagration but can do little, hardly any water being obtainable. » Later—3 a. m, About.,midnight, while all hands were sleeping, the firs broke out in the bake house in the basement of the asylum. It is one of the largest buildings in the Mari- time Provinces, Exactly ‘how ‘the fire arose is not very clear, but the smoke of sol fering wood sptead through tke build- ing into the crowded dormitories, and CAUSED THE UTMOST TERROR among the 400 or 500 inmates of the in- stitution. ‘Phere was no immediate danger so the officials of the asylam did not at once take steps to remove the people, The flaines in the basement of the main build- ing spread to the elevator, reaching tu the top of the twelve story building, and run- ning up this draft with fearfal velocity, set fire to all the upper stories in a few seconds. Inthe tenth story was the hos- pital-of the iastitation and in it were about SEVENTY HELPLESS PATIENTS, ost of whom were unabie to leave their beds, People early on the scene (the building is a mile or more out of town were engaged in moving the blind an decrepid from other parts of the buil/ling, nut thinking that the hospital Was ma dm-/ mediate danger. Current Notes. In France a secret dynamite factory has been discovered. There is a boom in real estate ia Mon- treal Properties offered have realized good prices. All the Eug'ish counties except Corn- wall, Cumberland, and Lancashire have less live stock than they had thirteen years ago. Heavy floods have caused great ioss of life and property in the central provinces of Japan, and in. the south-west cattle plague is killing thecattle. The financial position of the ieland is exceedingly bad ; currenoy is at 60 per cent. diseunnt, several national banks have failed, and the conduct of the whole banking system is regarded with suspicion. It is estimated that from 450,000 to 500,000 tons of charcoal are anaually made in the United States. No better way to get through forests: It was this which, wore than anything else, d»prived Lreland of hers. Few countries are n>w more bar- ren of timber, although tradition avers that a squirrel could once travel from tree to tree from Antrim to Kerry. New Yors Reporrs.—The exports of domestic produce from New York dari the past weck were quite small, their to being but $5.855,520. The exports of nearly all the chief articles of domestic pro- duce were light; but the outward movement of hops, notwithstanding the uousuall bigh prices prevailing, continues li the. shipm«nts to Liv 1 for the week anounting to 3.443 bales valued at $449,- 724. Since Jenuary 1, the exports yate $282,203,894, against $317 481,48¢ fi the same time in 1881, showing a decrease of $35,000,000. Pablic attention in England is now being turned to several big undertakings, whose influence, though not international, are none the less likely to prove of lasting national benefit, The promoters of the scheme for couneacting Manchester with the sea by a ship canal are vigvrously pushing ,on their preliminary enquiries and est- mates, while « counter enterprise which contemplates doing the same for North- wich, Cheshire, by means of the estuary of | the Dee, is also talked of, It is hke- wise probable that London ere long will To arrive per Steamship ‘* Miramichi,” from Montreal. ¥ea> Orders by mail promptly executed: . 3.
